Ex-minister Surapong criticizes government for mandating too many long holidays

Featured Replies

so he has never realized that these holidays were being taken while yl was pm, how pathetic can this moron get, this man really needs an education so he can at least make a sensible argument

Don't worry!

I guess, you junta- friends will have that covered!

Do you dispute that YL and her brother's government extended holidays when it suited them?

Or simply hoping a snide remark will divert and avoid the necessity of a real comment?

i mistakenly had a parcel sent to me in Pattaya from Penang the week before Songkran. It arrived in Thailand on April 9 by Express Mail Service. On the 4th of May, I received notice that it was available for pickup at Laem Chebang. There have been innumerable holidays since its arrival in LOS and another long weekend is underway. It took the Thai Post Office nearly a month to even acknowledge that they had the package in spite of having a tracking number. The standard response when we called was to wait or to call back tomorrow. It seems like every other day the PO is closed or there is a holiday.

Post from Malaysia always seems slow. That said, the post is holding my package as hostage over the five days once again. Seems the postman has perfected the art of leaving the card on the last non-holiday day.

For fun I tested the speed of Thai post last month. I sent myself a 3b letter from BKK to Pattaya. Took exactly two weeks to arrive.

It is not the holidays I object to it is the total lack of any international banking which screws up everything from pensions to cash remittances, as the banking system has yet to move towards a fully automated system.

Remittances to bank accounts with all the correct info is still stopped at Bangkok to await a numpty to say yes it can go through. Even from bank to bank. This is the 21st century but Thai banks are still in the 19th century.

What country are you getting money from ? I send money from the Netherlands and the next day its on my Thai bank. Maybe the country you get your money from is not as advanced as you like to think. For me Rabobank to Kasikorn inputted electronically takes one day even if send on a Friday.

If you send it on a Friday when does it actually get credited to your account?

I send GBP from Jersey to Krungsri. Like you, I usually receive it the following day. I have to make the on-line instruction before a certain time, UK time, or the bank will debit the account the following day. Likewise money here is usually credited and shows on-line in the Thai GBP account the early pm.

I usually avoid bank holidays and the weekend as my understanding is that manual checks are made by HSBC, hence the daily time cut off, and that the receiving bank in Thailand processes the transfer manually too.

Are you saying that Rabobank to Kasikorn is fully automated and so will happen regardless of bank working hours, holidays and weekends?

Actually.. i send it friday morning Thai time.. i got it credited on Saturday morning. I was really amazed. I expected it only to be credited on a Monday. I am sending Euro's to my Thai bank and get them converted into Baht. I can't say for sure its 100% automated because I don't send money over that often. Usually once every few months a high amount and that is it.

But I use Rabobank online banking to input the instructions and as I have given the swift code before and inputted all my (Thai) bank details I think its full automatic. But even so a one business day is normal nowadays. So I don't get it when people moan about having to wait long. A bank holiday can only mean the money is a bit later there. I always keep a reserve of money in the Thai bank so I am never really waiting on the money. I am quite organised so that always works out well for me.

It must be the post office in Pattaya that is the problem. If I get a parcel and don't collect it in a day or so my local post office here in rural Khampaeng Phet will deliver it to me even on a Sunday afternoon if necessary.

'We will have long holidays so people can spend money'. Hang on- holidays = shops closed so how can money be spent? That's logical!

Most of the shops are still open where I live.

The same would apply in all the shopping malls too I suspect.

Too true ,( government paying them selfs)

companies not paying the correct

supposedly 300 baht minimum wage, not paying extra money

for working the holidays ,

people give and give, government take and take

nothing new here.

sadly

Yes I agree and how can anyone (and most Thais are on this) afford DOMESTIC tourism on 300 baht a day? That's 7800 a month! My BF sister is looking for work. BKK first at 900 per month now Chiang Mai at 7800 Big C supercentre. And at least CM is cheaper to live

So where are these hoards of locals traveling to?

To the bank to borrow more money for travelling. Its an endless circle. Beware of when the music stops.

I missed the part in the OP that asked for a comparison and a "but...but...but Thaksin"- comment!

In this and surrounding villages it seems like one continuous holiday. My view is the work ethic here differs greatly from mine.

Nah mate, this mob as added many more extended periods of holidays than there was under YL.

Salaried government employees still collect their full wage on these holidays but the private sector (outside street vendors particularly) do not.

The Generals are pandering to their supporter base (the 4 million or so Bangkok based middle class bureaucrats) at the expense of the rest of the predominately poorer and self employed population and ruining the economy at the same time.

Soon they will all wear a shirt like this (i recommend on mondays):

Will they understand the words or how they impact life?

Holidays are great, but first you need to earn money to pay for them.

Maybe they gave it a "personal touch" and walked it down.

"He asked the government to look at itself in the mirror and start doing its job"

Ah, the irony of it all.

Pot meet kettle.

And let's not forget:

- This is the paymaster's cousin who openly said on appointment to the position of foreign minister (the first or second ranking ministry in any government anywhere) that he knew nothing whatever about foreign diplomacy stuff. One guess how / why he was appointed.

- This is the clown that broke several laws about passport issuance and said he would do it again if he had the opportunity.

- This is the low life who ordered the foreign ministry to open up it's processes to issue just one passport (for guess who) when Bangkok was under water.

- This is the clown who personally delivered said passport abroad when he should have been in Thailand overseeing flood relief / overseeing the welfare of many thousands of fellow Thai citizens who had their entire belongings, their roof, their sustenance etc., washed away by floods.

- This is the incapable and unethical game player who refused several times to abide by the law and answer legitimate questions posed several times by the Thai Ombudsman's office.

Perhaps you could give a specific reply rather than go for the now overused total and irrelevant diversion about but but thaksin.

Back to their province by moto, bus or train. Who can afford a plane ticket on less than 8000 a month?

More holidays...More drinking. More drunken road accidents...More alcohol related homocides. Less people to reject the referendum.

Perhaps you could give a specific reply rather than go for the now overused total and irrelevant diversion about but but thaksin.

Perhaps you and others like you could stick with the content of the OP for once?!

Just a reminder: it ia about a guy, who is critizing the current government about something that happens now!

Does he have a valid point- yes or no?

It is not about YS or what happened 2 years ago!

Is that so hard to grasp?

In 2013 there were 19 official holidays.

In 2016 there are 22 official holidays.

There was never an extended holiday before under YL between May 5-9.

More extended holidays under this lot.

Wake up man and see the light.

Funny how the Junta supporters failed to have any comeback to my previous post.

I'm still waiting for even just 1.

Seems they have their sleepers on again as usual.

I'm guessing no one's responded because it's utterly pointless.

PS: newsflash, it's not only those who support the current govt. who view it as such.

Welcome to all the Shinawatra lovers on such a nice day.

Not Shinawatra lovers but DEMOCRACY lovers.

Those, such as yourself, who support the current regime in all its infamy are not as you would like to believe crusaders against Shinawatra lead demagoguery and corruption.

You people are plain and simply ANTI-DEMOCRACY stooges.

Bigoted, authoritarian, racist, fascist, jealous, bitter and insecure souls who, I suppose through shame and self loathing, attempt to hide their inner selves from the world by cloaking their hatred and selfishness behind the false, propagandised fig leaf of Shinawatra evilness.

Don't be scared to be your true self. If you hate DEMOCRACY, if you hate EQUALITY, if you hate THE RULE OF LAW.... come out and say it. Don't give us the all too often repeated bull-dust that the Shinawatra's are the font of all Thailand's ills and the Junta are here to set the country on the "right and good path".

The Junta represents anti-democracy, the Junta represents inequality and the Junta most definitely represents a two tiered legal system.

None of these things are good and no good people would ever support them.

Can you morally and ethically justify your Junta support without mentioning the Shinawatra's?

Me thinks not!

If you really are "Smarter than You" as your avatar claims, can you point out where I am supporting the junta.

Is it true that Surapong actually was a minister in Yingluck's government?

Is Surapong really a cousin of Thaksin? Of course he is.

As for your rant what has that got to do with my post?

You have no idea who I am or what I believe but you blather away as though you are the only person on TVF who has a right to an opinion and if anybody dares to impugn or malign your hero, you immediately cast them as non democracy lovers and to quote your post,

"Bigoted, authoritarian, racist, fascist, jealous, bitter and insecure souls who, I suppose through shame and self loathing, attempt to hide their inner selves from the world by cloaking their hatred and selfishness behind the false, propagandised fig leaf of Shinawatra evilness."

So in your eyes Thaksin has never broken any law, committed any crime of any sort and has only the welfare of the Thai people at heart? This despite the fact that he is a convicted felon and a fugitive with 15 more charges waiting for his appearance in Thailand.

If he is so pure in heart why doesn't he return and throw himself on the mercy of the courts? After all it was under the PPP government of Samak that the charges were brought and under the PPP government of Somchai Wongsawat (Thaksin's brother in law) that he was convicted. BTW Thaksin owned the TRT, PPP and PTP political parties and even with Yingluck as PM and trying to ram an amnesty through he still is to cowardly to return.

billd766, the gift that keeps on giving.

1. Your 10,602+ posts reveal who you are and what you believe.

2. In the above brief post, by my count, you mention Thaksin 4 times by name and a further 6 times by pronoun plus Yingluck twice by name to bring the count up to an even dozen. Gosh darn those evil Shinawatra's, lets have a coup.

3. In my eyes I doubt there is a single Thai, let alone a Thai politician, General or Businessman that has not broken many laws. The question is why single Thaksin out? Corruption is rife in Thailand and the only cure is democracy. Why are you opposed to it?

4. Interesting point you raise that Thaksin was charged whilst PPP were in government. Rather than strengthening your argument it actually goes to show how even when those evil Shinawatra's are the duly elected government of the nation the military - elite network still control much of the permanent establishment (military, courts, NACC, EC etc..) and use them to do their bidding.

Stop hiding behind the ridiculous claims that the Yellow-Junta alliance are all about saving Thailand from super villian Thaksin Shinawatra. They are up to no good purely to pursue their own interests, as may I add are you.

Another robert twist and divide graduate?

There seems to be a gang of contributors who are currently focused on trying to convince us all that the paymaster, his ilk, his family have done no wrong and are no longer involved in any way and should no longer be mentioned.

Is comment about taksins name being mentioned 4 or 6 or whatever really that relevant? No, this is a beat up, an attempt at diversion and nothing more.

At the same time these contributors are trying to make everybody believe the current problems are all totally linked to the weaknesses of the current government.

Well IMHO the current government does have plenty of weaknesses, they are taking too long, losing some focus, making errors of judgment etc., after all they are soldiers with a soldiers approach rather then slick politicians. On the other hand there is an argument, IMHO, that if a previous government had been ethical we wouldn't need to have a reset button / a soldiers approach.

However IMHO there is no doubt that many previous governments have been less than effective, less then sincere, less than focused, allowed corruption to increase, etc.

I return to my first paragraph and the current situation, anybody who seriously thinks the paymaster, his ilk are no longer involved has their head in the sand / deliberately has their head in the sand.
