I have a medical insurance policy with BUPA, but that policy is not intended to cover long-term care costs, should I suffer from some long-term ailment, such as dementia, or become frail in my old age such that I need a live-in carer.

Is there any sort of insurance policy that can cover these types of costs? Or is it simply a question of saving money in the bank to fund costs like these?

IMHO, the insurance for profit companies in thailand are there to make a profit, not to benefit you. I was also with BUPA for few years and without a claim. In the end I opted out coz I thought it's not worth it. For a quality coverage, the premiums are astronomical. if you are a healthy bloke, self insurance is the way to go.
