Thai PM to visit Russia on May 17-19

BANGKOK, 13 May 2016 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-Cha is preparing for his official state visit to the Russian Federation from May 17-19, in a bid to strengthen bilateral ties and engage in several treaty signings.

The Department of European Affairs revealed that the invitation issued by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was the first in 11 years. Gen Prayut will visit St. Petersburg, the former capital of the Russian Empire where diplomatic ties were formally established between the two countries 119 years ago.

On May 18, Gen Prayut will meet with Mr. Medvedev to discuss cooperation in politics, economy, energy, education and culture, with food security and energy taking precedent. Thailand will also affirm its interest in joining the Eurasia Economic Union.

Both leaders will bear witness to the signing of several treaties, consisting of military and agricultural cooperation.

On May 19, Gen Prayut will travel to Sochi to attend the ASEAN - Russia Summit and meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to strengthen bilateral relations.

The visit by the Thai Prime Minister aims to expand trade between the two countries by five times its current value of 2.9 billion dollars. Next year, both countries will celebrate 120 years of diplomatic relations.

Thank you Advanced Member. Suggest you lighten up a bit. Obviously the subtlety and drift of my meaning has gone straight over the top of your head.

If it is so plain, then it should be very easy to give us the reasons why, Mr Expert.

The country are sniffing around for additional tourists. The rest, they haven't a clue how to run their own economic and political affairs so how could they discuss what they don't have? What can he talk about in regards to Thai education? The fact international schools are the only form of decent education and they're run by foreigners who aren't consulted on Thai schooling.....

Food, as mentioned is probably as far as it will go before trying to identify more ways to squeeze a few extra baht in. This will be presented from Thailand in the form of a TAT presentation.

A few treaty signing with the Russians might just tip the scales with the EU to impose a red card on the fishing industry. That of course would not be mentioned by the politicians in Brussels, but it would, bearing in mind the present situation over the Ukraine, annoy them somewhat !!! Bad timing I think by the PM.

Is the reason why you object related to the fact that these countries have the distinction of being considered as some of the most corrupt, backward and repressive of the worlds' dictatorships and you believe that Thailand would be a good fit? I expect that as the group was created by Russia for Russian political needs, that Thailand might not fit in too well. Not too many Thais are fluent in Russian, nor do I believe they could handle a dispute with the violent corrupt oligarchies which run these countries. In Belarus, if you disagree with the government thugs, they cut off your body parts, torture you for a bit and then kill you. It would be a wee bit of a culture shock methinks.

I see the swipe at the USA. However, one cannot mention these isolated items without acknowledging that when abuses occurred, they were addressed. In respect to the Guantanamo Bay facility, where would you like the detainees released? Their presumed homelands refuse to accept them, and the detainees still maintain their position of killing people. Would you be willing to host some of these people? There has never been another facility in the world that has been subject to as much scrutiny in terms of respecting detainees personal rights such as their religious activities and dietary needs. It would be great to shut the facilitty dow. Just get a country to take these people.

This is absolutely ridiculous.

Invade countries, destroy peoples life, bomb them to medieval, cause humanitarian catastrophe, million dead and now asks "point country to take these peoples".

Jugoslavia, Afganistan, Iraq, Lybia, Syria and so so on.
