China, Thailand set to hold joint military exercises

China and Thailand will hold joint exercises beginning this month, China's Ministry of Defence said on Friday, in another sign of improving relations since the Thai military seized power in 2014.

Thailand's military has sought to counterbalance traditionally close ties with the United States by engaging more with China since the May 2014 coup that the United States and other Western countries objected to.

The May 19-June 10 exercises will involve land and sea operations, the ministry said, as well as training in humanitarian relief and maritime transport.

That'll go down great in the region. I suspect this was China's PR suggestion.

Really? To what real purpose?

Is anyone surprised though ?

They can hold it in the South China sea and provoke the Vietnamese and Philippinos. That will give the Thai military some real training.

Southeast Asia - battle ground between China and the West.

Not surprising the first problem will be language, they have it with Cobra so why not here, secondly the Chinese wont part with much, especially their ration packs at the end of the exercises , you can bank on that ,thirdly they will be regarded as second class, something the Chinese are good at , and lastly ,no - one really gives a toss what Prayut and the Junta do, Thailand has no strategic value and has been replaced with OZ as the Military platform for US and other nations in Sth East Asia, at least they are all on the same page , speak the same language and carry the same military equipment and have democratic governments......................................coffee1.gif .

training in humanitarian relief

Thailand can practice capturing and deporting Chinese-provided Uighurs back to China. wai2.gif

Cunning Chinese, not so cunning Thai. whistling.gif

I can understand the appeal of teaching US arrogance a lesson, but given the appetites of China in the region that feels very shortsighted.

And the Chinese military learn how really bad the Thai military is. Oh yea, brilliant move.

You mean the arrogance of addressing human rights issues and military rule?

Oh I am sure that the Chinese have a thorough understanding of the limitations of the Thai Military. Probably a more thorough understanding than those at the top of the Thai Military!

Pity the Thai submariners.

thai military limitations you should first consider Chinese military limitations. the thai military looks like it has it shit together compared to the Chinese. Thai always back the wrong horse ,remember the Japanese and World war 2. The Americans have back the right horse in this race VIETNAM, they will take over S.E asia. Chinese got there ass kicked in the vietnam border war, now the chinese have not gotten any better.

A good high speed rail link through Thailand would make it easier for the Chinese to bypass the Vietnamese and attack them from both sides, if they ever needed to .

A bit like the Japanese used Thailand to get around the British in Malaya and the French in Vietnam.

Thailand can be a key back door stooge strategic ally in any conflict

It's a crazy old world at times, hard to figure out. Seems there is no shortage of countries lining up for the opportunity. The Americans would more than likely be giving Thailand 'permission'. The US and Australia nowadays conduct Naval Exercises with China too. Australian Ships visiting Chinese Ports and vice versa. Very Buddy-Buddy. Australia just last week signed up with Singapore on a big defence cooperation program which will see the SAF involved in large scale military training in Aust.

Recently Australia produced yet another Defence White Paper announcing massive spending on Naval Assets. All based on a future war with China! Meanwhile apart from ship visits and exercising, the Chinese just 'bought' our northern most Port, Darwin, on a 99 year lease, Obama says, 'Geez, I wish you had told us'.

Whilst America remains somewhat 'belligerent' in its disapproval with China's build up in the Sth China Sea and the making of Islands whilst the Industrial Military Complex rubs its hands with glee as it anticipates the next 'Cold War', American Ships are exercising with the Chinese too. Don't forget America had the two largest military bases outside of the US in the Philippines until the cold war ended - Subic and Clarke. Something tells me they are a little sorry they gave them up.

Doesn't surprise me that the Thais are joining the 'party'. Not a big deal really. Just being cordial.

In the not to distant future China will be a major maritime force. More than likely equalling the USN. Keeping your friends close but keeping your enemies closer? One of my opposite numbers in the USN one reckoned there was no way China could ever hope to match them on the seas. The would never master the art of Naval Aviation and Carrier Group Operations. But then they do have a habit of underestimating their enemies, they didn't reckon the Japs would be able to master it back in the 30s either. Pearl Harbour put paid to that theory.

In my day our Oz Naval Exercises/Scenarios were all based on a war with Indonesia. We could almost afford that. Trying to match it against the Chinese is costing us a fortune! Especially when they don't have to invade us. They can just buy us. As they are doing now.

Buggered if I know what's really going on behind the closed doors of international politics and brinksmanship. A lot of things don't seem to make sense. Maybe it is a good idea not to try and make sense of it in the first place.

The so-called "Pivot to Asia" serving as the current underpinning of American foreign policy in Asia has been repeatedly exposed as a continuation of a decades-old cynical region-wide US gambit to encircle and contain China while establishing military, sociopolitical, and economic hegemony over China's neighbors, particularly those in East and Southeast Asia......But Beijing is not Thailand's only potential ally. There is another.

Enter Moscow

Later this month - May 2016 - Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha plans to visit Moscow personally on what is hoped to be a significant leap forward in Thailand and Russia's already long-standing relations. The increasingly transparent nature of America's growing hostility toward Thailand in hopes of putting Shinawatra back into power leaves the Southeast Asian state little choice but to perform a "pivot" of its own. And it is a pivot that has been incrementally manifesting itself since Shinawatra was removed from power in 2006.

I'm sorry. I just have to point out that the landdestroyer blog (along with some sister blogs) is widely regarded as crap.

I'm happy to consider the geopolitics in Asia, and Thailand getting closer to Moscow; but I will seek other sources of information.

Ahh.... So it's all Thaksins fault!

Of course, of course...

Thailand is just looking for free/low cost military training and equipment anywhere they can get it.

A couple of interesting and timely articles

Hell Cometh to Earth: Is a U.S.-China War Really Possible?

It will be interesting to see what happens as the South China Sea situation develops and LoS has to decide which side they'll back.

As usual they'll try to go with whoever seems to be winning and change sides as needed.

If there's a naval component to these exercises the Chinese should send a submarine as they'll score almost instant sales as envy from Thailand will increase the ' must have ' attitude since face is everything.

I don't suppose you have been following Australia's saga of Submarine acquisition lately. Not to mention the sad tale of the Collins Class. 50 Billion Dollars, not so much to build 12 Subs, but to provide 2800 (trade union) jobs in Sth Australia! The last of which will roll off the slipway in 45 years time!

So. Did Australia go with a French Design Submarine in preference to a Japanese one just so as to not p_ss off the Chinese? It is quite a believable theory.

Australia too is playing both sides. China is now Australia's biggest trading partner whilst at the same time America remains a long time ally and friend.

The whole thing is got up for gigs.

Do we really need to have another Cold War.

Absolutely.

Yes, shame on them!

I cannot comment to much as I am no expert on the intricacy of international geo political relationships, but it will be interesting to see how long Thailand can balance China and West military relations. They are both plying for Thailand's attention which I am sure Prayut is well aware of and is playing to his advantage.

Australia certainly has a positive outlook on military relations with Thailand by sending military personnel to Khon Kaen to study the Thai language which is funded by the Australia government.

Good luck to Prayut and at the end of the day this can only benefit Thailand and it's people.

And exactly how can this only benefit Thailand and it's people?
