Eight budget airlines from the Asia Pacific region have joined forces to form the world's largest alliance of low-cost carriers. The alliance will enable customers to book connecting flights using a shared platform.

"Customers will be able to view, select and book the best-available airfares on flights from any of the airlines in a single transaction, directly from each partner website, " the Value Alliance said in a statement. The alliance serves more than 160 destinations with a collective fleet of 176 aircraft.

I get the "big 3" alliances, so travel can be almost seamless (of course the reality is different), but I have a hard time seeing the worth of this one outside of pooled purchasing power for the airlines. I am not seeing any passenger benefits since most of those carriers make it difficult to change planes on their own airline, let alone transfer to another one.

Air Asia is kicking all their a$$', they gotta try something.

On a side note, if anyone is ever going to SG I highly recommend Nok Scoot. Nice big airplanes, good leg room, good service. Way better than other low cost competitors.

It allows for "fly through" bookings without the need to recheck your baggage.

For example Scoot now flies out of Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast daily to Singapore. Using this system you can make an onward booking on say Tiger (in the one booking) that means no recheck at Changi.

Will be interesting to see if like Air Asia they charge more for the fly through (around 700THb in my experience) as compared to the separate bookings.

The system is not perfect. I took advantage of the cheap business class fare on Scoot but because tiger did not have business class it would not let me link an onwards economy flight to Malaysia. Hopefully they will fix this......... tried to call Scoot but they are worse than Air Asia when it comes to speaking to someone !!!
