Health insurance for my Thai wife

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a good health insurance here in Thailand for my Thai wife? I would like a good policy that is accepted at all of the better Thai hospitals. In addition, Although I have just signed myself up with Signa can anyone recommend possibly a better alternative? Thanks in advance for any help.

She will be covered by the Government scheme.

As most doctors practice in both private and Government hospitals, I hardly see the point of paying a high premium to go private.

Bupa Health Insurance would be a good place to start looking. Check them out on-line @ www.bupa.com or give them a call for details: 02 677-0055. They have offices in many cities in Thailand.

As mentioned all Thai are covered for medical care within Thailand at government run hospitals (which often have better facilities and doctors than many/most private hospitals). The downside of not having regular doctor can often be avoided by paid service at the same hospitals (which is normally quite reasonable). Accident insurance can be obtained in many ways, including bank cards.

Most normal Thai will not obtain private health insurance as obtaining service can be very frustrating if no pressure can be applied. Most feel it is better to wait the extra minutes for free or 30 baht service or even pay the very small cost of private clinic care than argue insurance. It is almost to the point being born human is cause enough to deny claims; as being born was a pre-existing condition (a bit of an exaggeration I admit - but only a bit).

But if insurance is a must be aware of what they cover (believe almost all have many options) and the amounts paid and cap - if a low payment option and she goes to one of the most expensive hospitals she may be paying most of the cost. Believe you may find some information in the insurance topic section.

My lady partner is with Axa just had a claim paid out no problem got bitten on her hand by a dog

I was just about to ask the same question as the OP.

My wife has an accident/hospitalization policy with AIA, but I'm wondering if there are plans available to Thai nationals which cover outpatient care as well?

Both Wife (38 yrs) and Son (2.5 yrs) were with BUPA International...

But their premiums over the past two years have increased at levels I'm not happy with (+25% increase over 2 years).

I've since stepped into a convoluted world of what we can and can't get vs cost effectiveness.

Some policies can be individual even for an Infant, others require a parent + Child, others require an expat as the main policy holder.

Ultimately I settled on AXA International Executive for my Son (THB 43,000) including OPD.

..and BUPA Thailand (Platinum 3) for my Wife (THB 35,000) In patient only.

The alternatives were obscure...

BUPA Thailand for my Son was THB: 69,000 baht (In patient only)

AXA were THB; 102,000 for my Wife (Inc OPD) or THB: 36,000 (Inpatient only and heavily capped).

BUPA International were: £1460 (THB: 75,000) for my Wife (Inpatient only with a £500 deductible).

BUPA International would not Insure my Son (before 6 yrs old) unless alongside an Adults Policy.

MSH is one of the best in Thailand but there are also other choice like LMG, Pacific Cross, Bupa Thailand, Aetna, AXA. Its best to compare them all side by side and pick the coverage that suits you and your family.
