I am interested in traveling to the place(s) where the cast Thai gongs are made (not the hammered ones). Can someone out there tell me where to go? If there is no one who knows which town or village makes these gongs ...How about where the hammered ones are made? I love the sound of the cast gongs and am looking for a BIG one. Well done BambinA, you beat me to it.

Ban Sai Mun is my village, some of my relatives are gongsters, let me know if I can help. However, although there are brass/bronze ones, my wife says they do not cast them. I haven't seen any being done that way, that's for sure.

Our village is (AFAIK) the major temple gong producer in Thailand, and certainly many of the residents set off in their pickups every couple of weeks, touring the temples of Thailand, trying to sell their wares.

If you decide to visit, PM me first as I am away quite a lot.

For your information, Ban Sai Mun is about 7km east of Phibun Mangsahan, on the road to Khong Chiam (on the north side of the river). Phibun Mangsahan is about 60km east of Ubon Ratchathani.

Do you know if especially the guys with the phonenr. in their adress are making castiron ones?

Do you know if it is a no-no in Thailand to use a Gong for something profane like calling the children in the upper rooms for lunch etc. instead of shouting their names repeatedly in an insane loudness?

I haven't seen cast iron ones. The common ones are made from welded steel sheet, others from sheet brass/bronze (not sure), and old ones seem to be cast bronze. There are sometimes old ones available (cracked or tone not good) that are brought back by the gong sellers when they sell a new one.
