Woke up with cold or flue!

I woke up in the middle of the night with a splitting head ache, cough and acheing bones.

Been the same all day...in room. Ive never had this before apart from when I had the (real) back in Scotland.

My missus says its because where I stay has been red hot and then the rain has come and its cooler.

I dont like the Thai docs as I beleive they over prescribe anti biotics and weird potions. Im 43 and in good health.

Should I just go to bed with a hot toddie (whisky, lemon and hot water) and ride it out?

1. Ensure you stay hydrated (not with alcohol! )

2. Take Paracetamol for the aches/pains and to reduce your temp.

If after a couple of days there is no improvement seek medical advice. (Sooner if the condition worsens)

This has nothing to do with the rain arriving ! smile.png

A cough isn't associated with dengue, which would start with a fever, followed by a headache. It sounds like you have a viral infection, possibly flu for which antibiotics are of no use unless your respiratory system were to develop a secondary bacterial infection later on.

Thanks for the info....I also work in Angola....worry it may be malaria....prob just the flu.

OK, Understood.

Give it a couple of days at the most before seeking medical advice.

I presume you are vaccinated against Yellow Fever and have been taking Malarial chemoprophylaxis:

Where are you based and do you have medical insurance?

Phanat Nikhom, Chonburi....yes with BUPA.

Go and see a doctor if the symptoms stay longer than three days, or even getting worse. Ebola, Marburg, Malaria, or just a flu?

Anything is possible, but such symptoms are in no way signs of an HIV infection.

I would not go to a local town clinic if a regional private hospital is available. They can run the full range of blood tests and an X-ray if your cough is persisting (though in the absence of special circumstances like chest pains or breathing restrictions you could wait and see for say 3 weeks on a standard cough. I'm assuming your health insurance covers you, or as an oil worker you can afford the reassurance of better facilities, a doctor with probably wider experience (including in dealing with foreigners) and better English/more communication. Just my experience, though I also happen to have a communicative doctor with good English (if I sit around for 30 minutes plus) in my local amphur town. Alternatively go the cheap route 1st but be prepared to back it up with better facilities if you don't get a good feeling that the local guy did every test you would expect/want.

Check your blood pressure if you can, just to be sure that is not what is causing the headache.

How high is your fever?

While it could just be influenza, typhoid is also a possibility - rare in Thailand but not in Angola. A blood count will help make this diagnosis. Meningitis also needs to be considered.

I really wouldn't advise putting off a doctor visit much longer. Should see an infectious disease specialist and be sure to tell him/her where you have worked and travelled.

Samitivej Sri racha or Phayathai Sri Racha are probably your best bets. i know there are 2 ID specialists at Samitivej (both there tomorrow, Friday)

Not sure re Phyathai as their website does not list doctors but could call their Gavin at the Intl dept and ask http://www.phyathai-sriracha.com/en/department/international/

I will give it one more day and see what happens. Again thanks for the information. Very useful.
