BANGKOK, 20 May 2016 (NNT) – The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has approved an updated version of the Nuclear Energy Act that aims to ensure the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

At its latest meeting, the NLA discussed a draft bill that updates the nation’s Nuclear Energy Act to keep it in step with modern circumstances. The committee that drafted the bill emphasized updating it to account for new developments and technology concerning nuclear radiation.

Chairman of the committee, Air Chief Marshal Chalee Chanruang, explained that the document amends 17 articles in the existing act, stating that the changes were made with care towards the peaceful use of nuclear energy and its applications in medicine, agriculture and manufacturing. He stated that relevant ministries would have to create their own by-laws to make the act effective.

A key change made by the NLA was to remove the term “security” and leave only the phrase “nuclear stability” to avoid future issues.

Thailand doesn't generate any nuclear energy.

So what relevance does amending the Act have?

Cozying up to Iran and North Korea?
