PHUKET: -- A Rohingya man has been shot dead while police attempted to recapture 21 Rohingya migrants who escaped from the detention block at the Phang Nga Immigration Centre before dawn today (May 23).

Police are claiming self-defence, as they say the escapees allegedly attacked the officers who were trying to take them into custody.

The alarm was raised at 3am, when guards at the centre noticed that bars on the windows of a second-floor cell had been cut. Police believe the escapees used hacksaw blades to cut the bars.

The escapees broke into two groups, with 15 heading down a canal which joins Phang Nga Bay and another six fleeing into the hills.

PHUKET: -- One escaping Rohingya illegal immigrant was shot dead by police as he allegedly attacked policemen attempting to arrest him at a mountain in Phang-nga province Monday morning.

Police claimed that the fatal shooting of the escapee was an act of self-defence after the policemen who were on hot pursuit of a group of Rohingyas were attacked.

Theee Rohingya illegal immigrants were re-arrested after 21 of them escaped from an immigration detention centre in Tambon Tham Nam Phud, Muang district of Phan-nga at about 3 am today after they used a saw blade to cut open the iron mesh of the detention cell.

Police said that the escapees, all of them men, split up in two groups – one group of 15 took an escape route along a stream toward the Pha-nga bay and the other six escaped to the mountain.

It is one thing to cut open the mesh from the cell, but does that lead them to freedom ?

Do they not have external security measures like high walls, and guards on the exit gates ?

Inept and cowards policemen who killed the poor man in cold blood.I am sure the Rohingya must have been running for their lives scared and frightened.

Do police not have mace, clubs, stun guns or any other form of non lethal weapons?

Where's the fun in that?

Well they would have killed him anyway given their HUMAN RIGHTS records on these matter.

Poor soul, desperate and no where to turn

The only ones knowing the true story, 1 is dead the other rohingra know to keep their mouth shut and the policeman on site. I

hope the brave police who faced this dangerous threat feels good about himself as he has to live with taking a human life. When and if justified a normal caring will always remember the look on the mans face when he killed him, but can justify self defense. To just exicute someone to show manhood or disdain for another human may give a lot of 2nd and 3rd thoughts, I hope.
