Koh Samui Municipality to outsource waste disposal

SURAT THANI, 24 May 2016, (NNT) - The Municipality of Koh Samui has recently held a public forum to hear solutions to its waste disposal problem, which has become increasingly severe.

In attendance were government officials, members of a committee on garbage management, and members of the public affected by the problem.

The committee suggested three approaches to solving the issues, which include hiring a private company to manage garbage disposal within Koh Samui and moving garbage disposal outside of the area. The last option under consideration was to have the municipality procure waste disposal machinery and manage the problem by itself.

The forum voted to hire a private company to transport and manage waste outside of the city, concluding that this was the most environmentally friendly option available.

How long is going to take? It's been going on for a year already under pressure from Surat & the result is still more BS.

Transported to where? Wasn't that discussed & agreed that it would be carted by barge to the mainland?

More BS.

If Sumui hasnt come up with a workable solution in over the past few years , what magic is this private contractor got planned that will solve the problem LEGALLY ? Sounds like another Thai method of postponing a judgement that they know will go against them. Then they can do a photo shoot pointing blame at others and start again.

That for several years now broken incinerator – or two? – cannot be fixed..?

Even back when the island had printed papers – some 4-5 years ago – they talked about the garbage storage problem, and that the incinerator should be fixed, but was delayed due to argument if it was under constructor's warranty or not. In my modest view, it must be cheaper, in the long run, to get than thing – or two, some articles mentioned two, and that one operates at 40 percent – in working conditions, rather than storage and bad tourist reputation, that can spoil the foundation for Samui's income...ermm.gif

They probably wait until the garbage breaks into the ground water and posions the whole water supply of Koh Samui.

[Chemicals, batteries and all sorts of toxic material just disposing into a large whole rarely works !!!]

When the first people die, the Island will be empty pretty quick and uninhabitable for a rather long time.

Then the problem is solved for the people involved as they will simply walk away. They have made their money ...

... sadly this might be what happens [sooner or later].

And we might be much closer to this point than anybody wants to acknowledge.

From a ThaiVisa article earlier this year - note the following extract:-

"In 2008 an ultimatum was issued from the Governor of Surat Thani to bring in contractors to deal with the problem, sadly it appears to have fallen on deaf ears."

Samuis garbage disposal crisis continues

garbage-samui-1-300x225.jpg

KOH SAMUI: — For several years now Samui’s garbage disposal problem has been escalating out of control. With an incinerator that has been out of action for years piles of toxic, rotting garbage continue to pile up at the disposal plant at Huathanon.

Rivers and ponds in the area are polluted, toxic and contaminated, the garbage plant itself has bene left abandoned, the windows are smashed and the staff are long gone.

Since our report in April last year nothing has changed, only the amount of rubbish has increased along with the smell and the risk of disease.

In 2008 an ultimatum was issued from the Governor of Surat Thani to bring in contractors to deal with the problem, sadly it appears to have fallen on deaf ears.

A Samui Times reader has sent us the latest photograph of the not so pretty side of paradise.

The problem is the garbage underneath that's "decomposing" into the ground !!! ... straight into the water

Maybe deep-wells are not such a good idea anymore on this island ?

Seems like watching a re-run of a very bad comedy, with awful actors.

Dear Municipality of Kho Samui,
Now when the S?(/@t hits the fan you are searching for solutions.
If you want to fix the problem from the past couple of years, you have to grab very deep into the tax payers pocket but this might not happen.
Unfortunately there is no solution for your ongoing problem and especially there will be not any "waste disposal machinery" which can help you either.
Waste is a complex thing and it can't be managed by a single machine upon the press of a trigger.
If you try to understand that and you are willing to spend some money and give the right people your ear and the right conditions to work you might find some body which can help you.
Otherwise good luck with that.

Rooo,

You have 16000 posts guessing you are familiar with the procedures in this country.

So you might understand that a proper waste management system which requires

Budged, expertise, quick decisions, and especially a proper legislation and Organisation would be very difficult to implement here do you?

There are many western countries which provided experts and financed demonstration projects in Thailand. How ever there where several decision makers which had another opinion about the subject, unfortunately.

The situation is catastrophic indeed perhaps no sealed ground perahps no leachate treatment and other things required for a sanitary land fill.

If they are forced to carry the waste with a barge to the mainland then there would be enough financial space for a waste management project including waste splitting composting even bio gas. I doubt that will happen.

But let's hope and see.

As far as I know several people have looked at this and told them what they can do to fix it but the crew running the show here don't want to know . No doubt until they get their cut !!

All of the money put for here stays on the mainland from what I was told, very little actually makes it here to do things.

Pretty insane when you look at all the construction that is going on and doesn't seem to be stopping.

I have had enough of the place due to it being ruined by greed and am moving to the mainland. It literally is becoming a dump !!
