EC ready for public referendum on 7th August

BANGKOK, 26 May 2016 (NNT) – The Election Commission has confirmed its readiness for the public referendum that will take place on 7th August.

Election Commissioner Supachai Somcharoen said on Wednesday that all units of the EC are ready to organize the public referendum while stating that there has been nothing to suggest the voting process won't take place or that any problem is about to arise and lead to the cancellation of the referendum.

Mr. Supachai said that the EC is equipped with legal power and laws to handle any act that could disrupt the public referendum and will be able to order the postponement of the vote-casting process at any interrupted polling unit.

He added that the EC has received cooperation from various agencies in launching the campaign to encourage voters to come out on August 7th, while saying that all will do their best to achieve the voter turnout target of 80%.

The last time the EC did that (2014 general election), the Constitutional Court invalidated the entire election.

But of course there is a difference this time - the Junta backs the referendum and can makeup any rules changes it desires. Legally.

Glad they are ready. Too bad half the population doesn't even know about the Referendum and majority of those who know about it do not know what it exactly contains.

Stock fridge full of beer on the 6th. Check !

Yeah, of course this time, the guy responsible for the disruption in 2014 endorses the draft, so he will not interfere..

Anyone else thinking to disrupt will find that this time the authorities will not allow that to happen.

But wasn't that the reason the last election was nullified? Didn't the Supremo Court rule that elections must be held on the same day everywhere?

Oh, sorry. That was the Phuea Thai government. Silly Winnie - what was I thinking?
