Another long winded piece of bs, that says a whole lot about nothing . This has been a great tool of this government especially when speaking of reform. The average thai reads these catch phrases reform before election, 4.0 plan that are swamped in complicated analogies that make no clear policy, sound like a great thing for the country.

This is just another unclear policy that will require 20 committees to sit round and discuss for 20 years wasting tax payers money.

The BKKPost had a story about the single gateway coming back. This goes against a tech future. I can't find the story on TV. I'd like to see what people think of that and the renewed interest in it by the junta.

My understanding is the Single Gateway has been a "go" since it was approved by the Cabinet. The government is trying to keep it low key.

It's easy enough to get around:

1. Get an offshore VPN that takes privacy seriously, Cloudnymous is good but there are lots more. ALWAYS USE IT.

2. Never use FaceBook. Not ever.

3. Use TAILS if you have Linux.

4. User TorBrowser if you have Windows or OSX.

5. Never, ever use your real name.

It's not hard to get it right, but it is easy to get it wrong. If ppl follow those simple rules, the Govt can buy what they like from Hacking Crew and others, it won't help them, and the fact that most Thai IT people are pretty useless is a big advantage.

The phrase "Thailand 4.0" has been in use since the BoI introduced the "concepts" back in 2013. It doesn't seem to have gotten much traction, but the Junta is talking it up this week.

Behind the scenes the NLA is about to pass, by a vote of 180:0, amendments to the Computer Crime Act which will allow authorities to walk in to any ISP and tap/decrypt comms, without a warrant.

ICT pushes drive towards 'Thailand 4.0'
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Ministry will embark on three strategic
digital initiatives by year-end to facilitate the emergence of "Thailand 4.0" -- a sustainable,
value-based economy.Building digital communities, establishing digital parks for small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and creating digital innovative start-up networks are the
government's three digital initiatives to be rolled out this year. Speaking at the Digital Thailand
2016 fair yesterday, Mr Uttama said the government was committed to working closely with all
local and foreign companies as well as international organisations in order to ensure that the
country will not fall behind.Mr Uttama said efforts to build digital communities were aimed at
promoting all industrial sectors, especially agriculture, to use digital technologies to increase
their productivity and competitiveness. The establishment of digital parks for SMEs is intended
to drive local companies to enter into Industry 4.0, or the fourth industrial revolution, in order
to digitise the manufacturing sector.Creating innovative networks to encourage start-up
businesses is one means of supporting efforts to develop Digital Thailand, said Mr
Uttama.Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the government is optimistic that the push to
help the country enter its "Thailand 4.0 phase" in the near future will be successful.

I stand corrected on Tails. Aggravating because I knew that already, I just didn't remember... Grrr.

Item 1, is not so much about FaceBook, though I have no doubt they gave the information to the Govt (they denied having given 'direct access' to data as I recall, but did not deny giving data). Thais need to feel a part of a group, to identify with a group, it's a psychological weakness. Given that, and their need to brag, it isn't the technology that should not be trusted, but the behaviour of the Thai, and whatever they might blurt out. I have a dreary view of Facebook users generally though, to my mind they are generally socially inadequates, as is anyone who craves the company of other people. or the approval of other people. Hope you aren't a FaceBook user!

To illustrate the point, I make reference to the recent prosecution of a bunch of FaceBook users, how dimwitted can you be, assuming that a company like Facebook who have already had 'talks' with the junta government isn't going to sell its soul for the business to be had among a population like Thailand? Just dopey.

To my mind, the way Zuckerberg developed FaceBook speaks volumes about his integrity. Why would we think he would not give out data if he was offered a shutdown of the Thai market as an alternative?

"which will allow authorities to walk in to any ISP and tap/decrypt comms, without a warrant"

They can wear out shoe leather walking into all the ISPs they want. If the ISP isn't doing the encrypting, then they're not likely to be of much help with the decrypting. ...unless the user goes out of his way to make it easy for them. What authorities CAN do is outlaw the encryption-employing tools & methods and/or attempt to block them. 'And then simply start knocking on the doors of the users logged using them... Chinese style.

What the "authorities" just don't get is that modern business communications, both b2b and with clients & customers, depend on secure links, and some businesses will simply close their doors & leave before they'll submit to having their communications monitored. And clients & customers won't pay for secure services suddenly rendered insecure by these tactics. This certainly isn't going to be of any help bringing new business investment flooding into Thailand, or growing businesses now operating there. Neither is it going to help Thailand's human rights standing. Last but not least, the users the authorities actually & legitimately most need to monitor, will have the means & resources necessary to evade these intrusions.

What's going on here is the government thinks it can, and is seeking to, emulate new BFF China's processes & practices and doesn't particularly care about the fact that means inheriting communist human rights abuses as well.
