Hi-so dad sentenced to 5 years prison for using meth

Isn't it odd that all those usual suspects who accuse the Thai justice system of never jailing the criminal hi-so element, and who should normally be rejoicing at this verdict in order not to be hypocrites, have all changed their tune and are now condemning the sentence? And some of them are just keeping a low profile on this presumably because they can't find anything to bash in the story.

Thai justice just can't win when Thaivisa is involved.

' Can't find anything to bash ' unlike you who always finds a member or two to have a go at but never a point of discussion, debate or information.

He probably deserves the time for his parenting skills, even though he is serving it for drug use. I agree with others that it looks as if the police and wittingly or unwittingly acting as an instrument of someone who has been upset by this person. If Thailand were a literary society like US or UK, with his track record he could do the time, use it to write an autobiography and come out richer than he went in, Unfortunately for him it would have to be a cartoon book here.

I think its obscene that he got such a long sentence for a personal amount of gear. But the fact that he has lost face, not been able to hush it up with all his money, and getting some degree of comeuppance for his shameful actions during the mooham saga is excellent. Rot on :)

The army are using Article 44 to incarcerate people that they think are against them, have political connections to the Red shirts, or just to topple businesses that compete with their own guys. Sixty five year-old successful business owners in Thailand do not do "ice" or other 'party' drugs.. And if they ever did, would never normally go to jail for it.

That is quite a tough punishment for this amount of drug, in general people get off with far less problems. I knew of a Thai guy (poor) who was out after a few months for a bit of yabaa.

But his son did something far worse and got of with less time.. go figure.

Same here. My brother in law got 2 months for a few pills. He rang his Mum and adked for 50 thousand to get out and she refused.

His Dad actually complained to the authorities that he should ve had 2 years.

Strange.

Mum and dad obvioulsy don't want the idiot bum hanging around bludging on them, sleeping, eating and taking drugs.

I can think of someone I know like that.

Sorry, I hadn't read it fully.

He's Moo Ham's father??

5465489_orig.jpg

Yes he is the father of Moo Ham, however one may find that Moo Ham was treated differently, as he is the son of his mother and there may have been a special level of sympathy extended to her offspring.

Sometimes an occasion can arise that the husband may not merit that same level of sympathy and therefore not receive special treatment, in fact it could be to the extent it all goes in the opposite direction for the husband.

Stupid man, he should have ordered it from the Police. If he had a policeman friend he could have got it for free n also get Scot free in such incident. Tough Sentence though!

???

His brother is a retired deputy police chief!

One of the big problems with drug possession laws is that people can be set up easily. Someone can just drop or hide a tiny packet of illegal substance in your bag, pocket, or hand you an item (either as a gift or purchase or an item to pass on to someone else) with some illegal substance hidden inside, and you can then technically be charged with possession and spend years in prison. It is not fair at all.

In this case he did admit to personal use, but imagine if he was not an illegal drug consumer at all and someone planted the 700mg under a pillow. He could still end up getting this harsh sentence, or worse (4.5 years in prison and 400k THB fine) if he denied possession.

Possession laws should be abolished. The recent UNGASS 2016 event marks a major turning point in global drug policy and I hope Thailand opens its eyes to the dialogue and recommendations that have come out of it.

Here's a quote from an analysis of UNGASS 2016, titled "Impasse or turning point for the ‘war on drugs’? UNGASS 2016, explained"

The era of tough punishment will increasingly be seen as a bizarre historical mistake.

LOL.

I feel for you mate.

How about all the drugs that are just getting lost all over the place by tweakers who don’t know half the time where they’ve hidden their stash once they’re wasted.

Next time you check into a room make sure you look under the mattress, inside the pillow, behind ac, in the ventilation shaft, in the dvd slot etc. etc.

And don’t miss those light fixtures eitherlaugh.png

It's actually not a bad idea to do all that checking when first entering a hotel or guesthouse room, as previous guests in the room could have forgotten their stash, and the cleaners may not always look in every little place because they may have so many other rooms to clean and may have a set maximum amount of time to spend on each room. Though if a cleaner does one day find some substance, and the cleaner or the manager reports it to the police, you as the current (or just-checked-out) guest may most likely be charged for possession instead of one of the many previous guests. All the "it's not mine" claims would probably just fall on deaf ears while you get sentenced the maximum prescribed because you did not admit guilt.

Seems a very disproportionate sentence compared to other crimes, and even other people charged with possession.

One wonders if the authorities thought they'd be in for a large payoff due to his status, but he refused to pay so they threw the book at him? dry.png

I think your onto something. Maybe he also supported the wrong side over the "turbulent" years. Punishment for crime here is always a coin toss.

Maybe a coin toss but I think it has more to do with which way you toss your money ...and how much.

A very disproportionate sentence.

But if, in desperation, you confess to something you didn't do, your punishment is halved, which makes it a bit hard to tell who is really guilty and who is just cutting their losses. Helps to keep the confession/conviction rate high though and reduces the amount of annoying investigative work required.

Wouldn't it be nice to see the Red Bull Cop Killer or the drugged up Benz driver who killed the two young Thai grad students get at least that much punishment? How can this justice system take itself seriously? There is NO CHANCE of reform in this country.

The nonsense that they call the judicial system here puts young mothers (18-34) away for up to 8 years for having very small amounts of yaba, with no chance of probation! Teenagers, the scions of so called "Hi-so" families can murder and flee and the system leans backward to give them the benefit of the doubt!

And you all thought that Sakdina/3 seals was done away with in 1932! Ha!whistling.gifsad.pngbah.gifwai.gif

The punishment is more damaging than the crime for him.and his family. The war on drugs is a war on the people. Not a real crime and not real police work and not real justice - just barbarism. The USA is no better. They and the UK, under Wiston and his socialist bullies started this nonsense.

Contradiction at its best !

No contradiction, I am not suggesting verdicts are sold, it was your suggestion. I am just extending your suggestion to point out its flawed logic.

I also note you edited out the bits you had no answer to.

Utter BS. You clearly suggested that the judges verdict could be bought, I am suggesting that it cannot.

I agree that before it gets that far, the system is very corrupt. However, if you think that the higher people in the judiciary system, are prepared to throw everything they have achieved in life, family included, for a bribe, then keep on thinking that way.
