Chiang Rai set to compensate victims of school blaze

CHIANG RAI, 2 June 2016 (NNT) – Local authorities in Chiang Rai province have resolved to present families of students killed in a recent school fire accident with compensation money of 750,000 baht each.

Wiang Pa Pao District Chief Prasert Jitpleecheep has called a meeting with the committee in charge of providing assistance to all students who were affected by the fire at a girls’ dormitory of Pitakiatwittaya School on May 22. Also joining the discussion were around 50 teachers and parents of affected children.

On this occasion, Mr Prasert made known that all banks have been able to raise a combined 14.77 million baht for the fire victims. Of the amount, 750,000 baht will be paid to the family of each of the 17 students killed while two other students who are in critical condition will receive 400,000 baht and 600,000 baht. For three others with minor injuries, they will be given 100,000 baht each.

In addition to this, death benefits were previously paid by insurance companies to families of the deceased at the rate of 200,000 baht each. An average of 400,000 baht in aid money was also offered to each of them by public and private organizations.

Good to hear.

I do hope that someone might also put up and maintain some smoke detectors and make sure doors can be opened at this and every other similar school.

Very sad put possibly preventable tragedy.

No mention of any steps taken for prevention in future, just compensation. Pathetic

That's it pay 'em off, restore harmony....never mind about who's responsible or health and safety....just so long as it all goes away......and we can get on with are lives - despite burning several kids alive.

...why don't they punish the scum that were being paid to watch over them....

too busy putting a price on the body of a dead schoolgirl.

That sounds like the NRA response whenever someone with a gun massacres children in a school in the US or some western military drone wipes out innocent men, women and children in Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan. "Oops, sorry. Regrettable collateral damage. The important thing is that we have a Constitutional right to have an arsenal and to kill whoever annoys us at will."
