BANGKOK, 2 June 2016 (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health and four other agencies have launched a campaign to provide free cornea transplants in honor of Her Majesty the Queen’s 84th birthday anniversary on August 12 this year.

Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn presided over a signing ceremony for an agreement between the Ministry of Public Health, the Thai Red Cross Society and three health funds.

Dr. Piyasakol said the ministry will provide financial support and human resources for the campaign, while the Red Cross Society has been tasked with managing cornea supplies. Donations for the campaign will be accepted at public hospitals.

The three health funds, which are managed by the National Health Security Office, the Social Security Office and the Comptroller General's Department, will shoulder all medical expenses for eligible patients.

The five-year campaign will run from August 12, this year until August 12, 2021. Over the course of the campaign, the ministry hopes to provide medical aid to as many as 8,400 patients.

What's the saying! You get what you pay for? Somehow this report is not enticing should my family need it done...

Best of luck to the Red Cross in finding 8,400 cornea over a five year period, as I assume we are not talking about synthetic cornea in this instance.

Maybe brain transplants would be better

Maybe brain transplants would be better

Some of the brains here would be extremely valuable, not because of the intellectual quality, but because they have been completely unused by the previous owner.

Poor report !

Corneal donors need to ensure their willingness to donate is known about by their family and medical advisers prior to death. The corneas need removing, expertly, shortly after death and the infrastructure which facilitates this needs to be in place.

I sincerely hope that more thought has been given to a project, which would restore sight to many, than is apparent from this 'report'

cornea's from pigs will soon be available,it's already been done in China

What an idiotic comment: Brain transplant would be better for you......
