NONTHABURI: Food and drug administrators have reacted quickly to the death of a Nonthaburi schoolgirl who died after taking weight loss pills.

The 16 year old girl fainted while at school and died thereafter at Pak Kret hospital. It has emerged that she had been taking the pills that her mother had bought online through a Facebook page advertising weight loss pills and other drugs.

A bust of some 520,000 pills of several varieties was made at three locations in Chonburi including Panat Nikhom and the town centre. The drugs seized were worth an estimated 11.5 million baht and were advertised on the "Beauty Chic by Noon" page.

Officials had conducted a sting in the wake of the girl's death earlier in the week in which some products were tested for and found to contain the drug sibutramine. The drug has been associated with cardiovascular events and strokes and has been withdrawn from the market in many countries including the UK, US, the EU and also Thailand. It was previously used in the treatment of obesity in conjunction with diet and exercise.

It has been learnt that the girl who died in Nonthaburi had a medical condition that would make it dangerous to take sibutramine. She suffered a seizure and could not be revived.

No arrests have yet been confirmed but charges that could result in sentences of up to 20 years imprisonment and 400,000 baht in fines are being readied for those behind the online distribution. A doctor from the food and drug administration has warned about buying drugs online and particularly cautioned about weight loss pills.

Bunchai Suksomboon said that the drugs containing sibutramine could be dangerous for those with certain conditions and their use in Thailand was banned since 2010.Those with blood pressure issues and high lipid content in the blood could be particularly at risk, he said. Parents and teachers should be particularly aware of the risks and everyone should accept that controlling weight was a complex issue involving exercise, metabolism and diet and not one that can be solved by simply taking a pill, he said.

what a sad, sad, sad news item. RIP young lady and condolences to your family. Body fascism rules ok, it's not about what you feel like on the inside but all about what you look like on the outside.

Why not close the production of this drug? They suppose to be pharmacological specialists/experts following latests research and international guidance and not a distributor/business person, who probably did not possess adequate knowledge and expertise.
