Hi,

I have CAT internet which has for 3-4 days been incredibly slow – as in will not download pics and cannot access most sites. My friend who lives 5 km away also has the same problem. If someone in the area is downloading movies etc (as in 129gig), would this cause our internet connections to be so slow. We have contacted CAT – as expected no response.

Thanks for any input.

Someone in your area downloading a big file shouldn't have much if any effect on your internet certainly not to the extent you describe.

although most people do share ( contention ratio ) with 20 to 100 other users.

Have you recently had rain and lightning in your area ? either CAT or your equipment could have been partially frazzled.

Go to your nearest CAT office with your modem / router and ask them to check it and complain about your bad internet experience.

Thanks again johng. The fact that both myself and my friend in another village both have the same problem suggests problem at CAT's end but they are not interested in doing anything about it.

They always say its your fault turn off /on the modem, check user name and password restart your computer etc

( sometimes it is the customers fault ) partially frazzled equipment can look like its working properly but doesn't

keep pestering them by phone.... but better to go to their office if possible.

Do you do any maintenance on your PC? check for programs that might be running in the background, updating themselves, do you clear you cashe and history, do you reboot your router, all can help

Oh dear

Is that the fibre optic connection with wireless router?

I am having that connected soon. The installed the fibre optic cable over 5 weeks ago and I am still waiting for the guy with the router to turn up but was hoping to be to use it for live sports stream. I have asked for a slightly higher speed than the basic package so hopefully that will be better.

Thanks donnybay - done all that you suggested, still no joy.

Sorry no help, those things usually sort me out, leaving the router off for a while the main one

Are you connected directly to the router or using wireless?
