I live in the sticks and am excited that CAT has installed fibre optic cable locally.

But, is it any good?

They advertise speeds of 15/1 Mbps for 890 Baht/month or a supposedly faster service of 30/3 for 1,500/month.

Anyone using this service your comments would be helpful

Thanks

Hi, I had CAT fibre optic (FO) for 4 years but in the end left for 3bb. The speed in general was good but the downside was it often went down. Now here is the problem, i also live in the sticks and was also delighted when we got CAT FO. But the are a government organisation and as such only work 9 to 5 Mon to Fri. There are many reasons in the country why it goes down, lorries with high loads break the cable, when farmer burn off crops the fire often damages the cables and last but not least squirrels like to dine on the cables. Now when one such event happens on the day before a Public Holiday such as Sonkran then no Internet for 8 days which i experienced. Even a normal Friday means no Internet until Tuesday, as priory will be given to repair any city, or town problems before the one or two out in the sticks. Complains got me nowhere and I was asked by the local office to put my complaints to the regional office which I did. They never even acknowledged my letter. When 3bb became available I changed and the they repair 24/7 very good service, cheaper than CAT for higher speed. I think CAT maybe OK for the city but they are most defiantly not geared up to offer a service in the sticks

I have CAT Fiber Optic, live in Chiang Mai ampure and am well satisfied with it.

I pay about B1,600 a month and only had one problem in the 11 months I have had it installed.

We had a 'Cyclone' mega storm hit. Electrical supply went wonky and No connection.

Took some time for me to find that my IP adress had for no reason changed and I asked the net on my laptop, which was switched off at time of 'Cyclone', via a 'Condo' Wi Fi for an explanation.

Switch off router, total disconnection, for minimum of 5 mins then switch on.

I disconnected for 30 mins switch on, it reset to correct IP addy and no problems since.

I had CAT fibre optic 30/3 Mbps for a year or so at 1,500 baht / month. I live on Ekamai. I figured the international connection might be better than other providers, but I didn't notice any difference. CAT installed the fibre optic cable from way down the street to my 9th floor condo for free.

Main problem was that the connection kept on dropping out on a daily basis. I complained numerous times to CAT, and although the staff were friendly, they were also hopelessly incompetent. Many times I asked them what they have done to fix the problem but never received a response, except to say that "technical" were working on it. After noting down the date/time of the outages, and my contacts with CAT, and filling up one full page of notes, I reluctantly decided to abandon CAT and go for TRUE fibre ("DOCSIS") 30/3 Mbps which is more reliable, cheaper at 1,400 baht / month, but has the huge advantage (for me) that their support staff speak English and are generally far more efficient. Maybe worth trying CAT if you live in the sticks and the only choice is between CAT and TOT.

Until a few months ago I lived in the Jungle on Samui I brought up Cat Fibre Optic at my own expense but have to say it was worth every penny spent I could watch Worldwide TV with the help of a myiptv box and for three years rarely had any issues and if I did they were there at a moments notice . I have now relocated and am living in a long term rent on a resort where they claimed they had good internet it I am afraid to say is total crap all because the owners only want to pay for a basic service I paid 1,600 baht very move to CAT it was cheap for what I got my frien who had 3bb was always having problems I suggest you go with it if it is in your area !!!!!

Just got AIS Fibre optic [VDSL] for the same price I was with True on a slighly lower speed

15MB/5MB - 590b + VAT.

Can say thus far been quite happy, only been a week but feels much smoother and more responsive than True [13MB / 1MB] speed.

However if this is your only option go for it as i did, it is certainly better than a free to air service unless you can now get 4G. In my time it was Edge so CAT FO was a Godsend.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I know what you mean about the outages. They strung the cable up 5 weeks ago but still no service available as three times now the cable has been broken or not put up right in the first place I am not sure. I am using my only alternative at the moment which is true move 3G. It is expensive at 1800/month for 10 Gig but at least it works most of the time just not fast enough for live streaming.

Fingers crossed CAT will work out better and at least I can leave it on overnight downloading stuff. I once did that by mistake with true move and it cost me over 5000 Baht for the automatic top ups!!

CAT answers their telephones in outages, unlike True and 3BB. They always send a technician within hours of report, even at 3am.

CAT's the most expensive Internet in BKK and worth every satang.
