BANGKOK: -- Excise tax collection for the first eight months of 2016 fiscal year has exceeded target by 5.10 percent of 16 billion baht, said Mr Somchai Poonsawat, director-general of Excise Department, on Thursday.

Altogether 349 billion baht in excise tax were collected during the eight-month period representing an increase of 18.41 percent or 54.3 billion baht compared to the same period a year ago.

For the whole 2016 fiscal year, he anticipated that excise tax collection would surpass target by 20-25 billion baht in line with increased purchasing power. He cited car sale which continues to expand with car manufacturers expecting 1.2 million cars being exported and 800,000 cars to be sold locally.

The five top excise revenue-making products are: petroleum products, 114 billion baht; cars, 76 billion baht; beer, 62.1 billion baht; liquor, 44.8 billion baht; tobacco, 43 billion baht.

Mr Somchai said the department was consulting with the Food and Drugs Administration, the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Federation of Thai Industries about whether excise tax on sweetened drinks should be adjusted.

Total satisfaction on his face. And he got himself some flowers too.

Readers may be surprised by both the scope and rates of excise duty in Thailand. It is on a wide range of goods and then VAT is charged on top (bizarrely including charging VAT on the excise duty).

Good for Thailand, not good for the middle to low income people who bear the bulk of these taxes.

Especially the auto tax is bad as it hurts the middle and lower to buy a car even though it is made in Thailand !!

Maybe this is due to the increase in price of vehicles who pollute?

Hang on a minute!

The Revenue are collecting 44 billion baht per month in excise duty - that is just under £ 1 billion per month in excise duty alone not counting the other taxes. That sounds high to me. Is that right?
