Cashing a Company Cheque (what paperwork?)

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what paperwork is required to cash a cheque made out to my company? I normally deposit cheques into our bank account, but I need to do that in the province our account is in and I will not be back down there for a few months.

Doing a deposit at a branch other than your own is normally not a problem. A small service charge applies. They don't even normally ask for ID. I mention that because I did get asked for ID the last time I did it, which was about 10 days ago.

Thanks for the reply. It's normally no problem in the same province, but I tried depositing one last week and I was told I can't. So now I would like to cash the next cheque at the Bank and Branch that the customer uses, without depositing it.

In 20 yrs. here, I have made inter-provincial deposits many times. There is no difference from an intra-provincial deposit, except for the imposition of the small service charge. I presumed that you were asking about doing a deposit at a different branch of your bank. If you are standing in a bank where you are completely unknown, that changes everything. I think you will need to have whoever signed the cheque standing there with you. While I have never done it myself, I do recall a Thai friend telling me that.

Have you considered taking the cheque to the issuing bank branch and asking them instead of getting 'maybe' answers here?

The next cheque is only due next week. I took the last one down to Bangkok to deposit.

Looks like this is going to be a long term client, so I am going to try and open an account at the bank and branch that the client uses.

Welcome to Thai banking.

Checks here are not used like anywhere else that is fairly developed.

Your last suggestion is the best solution. Open an account there.

Intraprovince banking can still be a problem because besides the service charges there is time factor. And some checks must be deposited and cleared on that day. For shipping companies they can incur interest charges if delayed a day - on checks for 2 MB this interest is a significant amount. This keeps the messenger business employed.

Even cashiers checks are a joke. For example, try getting a cashiers check from Krung Tai bank in Kanchanaburi, made out to a person or even to cash and try to cash it at a Krung Tai bank in bangkok. cannot. Banks dont even recognize CASHIERS CHECKS FROM A BRANCH OF THE SAME BANK !

We have sold condos to people and the easiest solution is often just to have the client open an account. They can cash it the same day if done in the am or next day.

Also, don't forget the other interesting thing about checks. If your company writes a check and it bounces or if you stop payment on it, you can be held for a criminal offence. I know. We did it. The court was quick and easy. They kept the passport of the foreigner owner of the company until he paid up. And he had weeks to do it before he would have been put in prison. That is serious stuff.

It goes to show you there must be or have been massive amounts of fraud with checks AND / OR Banks just do whatever the fuc$ they want to here because it is a monopoly. Thailand does not allow foreign banks in for just these reasons. They make money from it all and consumers do not benefit at all.

On the other hand, they do follow other Thai banks. This has allowed for ATM machines everywhere and the easy use of Internet banking and transfers. Once one bank offered it all others had to do the same.

Anywhere that is fairly developed does not use cheques.

I've been banking in the US for decades and I can't remember the last time I wrote or received a paper check/cheque. In Thailand I've sent or received paperless bank transfers many times, usually via the nearest ATM or paid for utilities etc. at a 7/Eleven or the nearest bank branch.

What "fairly developed" country are you from?
