If I understand the Thai Embassy's visa page correctly, you can get a 3 months visa if you are over 50 and meet certain economic criteria. Can that visa be extended for another 30 days at your local immigration? If yes, does that mean, you can stay in the country for 4 months without having to leave?

This is, what I am talking about:http://www.thaiembassy.se/en/visa/types-of-visa/49

The requirements for single and multiple entry are identical?

(kind of different from other embassies/consulates)

With the multiple you could do a border run to a neighboring country (a one day excursion) and get another 3 months.

You can do that up to the expiry date of the visa and so almost get 15 months.

Border run can be done by land or air.

The border run is also possible with the single entry Non O, just that you get a 30 or 15 day visa exempt stamp when reentering.

Swedish citizen gets 15 days only at land borders, 30 days by air, e.g. Kuala Lumpur.

Yet another option for four months: single entry tourist visa (60 days).

Extend in Thailand once by 30 days

Add a border run by air, another 30 days.

Nope.

A Non Imm O Visa can be extended by 12 months if you qualify financially.

I.E 800,000 Baht in a Thai bank.

Thanks for your reply. But if you read the link, I provided, the way I read it (points 5 & 6) it is possible to get a 3 months visa from your local embassy, if over 50 and qualifying economically. Is that correct? If yes, can that be extended here with another 30 days?

We a talking about a friend coming here for a 4 months holiday, and since he is an elderly gentleman, he would like to avoid a visa run.

I am aware of a SETV can be extended to 4 months, but that means, he has to leave the country.

Thanks for your time.

A non immigrant visa entry cannot be extended for 30 days.

Only tourist visa and visa exempt entries can be extended for 30 days.

With a Non O visa you get 90 days every time you enter Thailand, so you need either to have a multiple visa or buy a re entry and then make a visa run every 90 days. Or qualify for a 12 month permit of stay.

I'm 73, I always get a tourist visa. All that is required for this is proof that you have the equivalent of 60,000 Baht income in your own local bank or 180,000 baht that would cover you for 3 months stay that is in your account when you apply for your visa. Then get the 30 day extension whilst in Thailand at an immigration office and no proof of income for this is needed. You don't have to spend 180,000 Baht just prove you have it available. Your friend is coming as a tourist keep it simple and behave like one. No border run needed.
