SRT to celebrate 100th anniversary of Hua Lampong railway station

BANGKOK, 17 June 2016 (NNT) – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has planned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Hua Lampong railway station.

SRT Governor Wootthichart Kallayanamit said the 100th anniversary of the Bangkok railway station or Hua Lampong railway station will fall on June 25 and SRT has organized activity to celebrate the important occasion by exhibiting four steam locomotives, allowing people to observe the newly renovated bogies, displaying an exhibition on the history of SRT, setting up food stores in retro atmosphere and issuing a commemorative stamp.

Hua Lampong railway station is a main terminal to northern, eastern, northeastern and southern Thailand. It connects with the MRT underground system and features a distinctive half-dome structure, designed by Italian architect Mario Tamagno in an Italian neo-renaissance style.

Hua Lampong railway station has an elegant design, similar to several government buildings and public monuments built during the same period, such as Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, the Bank of Thailand museum and the parliament building – all designed by the same architect.

Its appearance and interior layout have been compared with Frankfurt railway station, which also features the half dome facade, a giant clock on the front gable and open-air passenger galleries.

Ah the good old SRT, the winner of the most disfunctional, incompetent, loss making public body in a hotly competitive race.

No doubt a lavish celebration on the public purse is just whats required.

I just wonder why seemingly every Governemt is scared to touch the SRT.

A bloomy description for a railway museum, just that this one is still in operation.

I was there only once and could hardly believe what I saw.

Oil drenched track beds, railcars from the museum.

Recently watched a documentary and the opening ceremony of the new worlds longest railway tunnel in Switzerland.

Like viewing pictures from another planet.

That station needs a massive overhaul. The SRT owns a lot of land. They are investing and I think they will be much better than what they are 5 years down the line. Should have happened a long time ago but better late than never. Looking forward to the new trains soon to be delivered.
