New to this forum so I hope I'm doing this right.

I have a student visa question: Our son (Danish) has just graduated from high school in Bangkok. He is now accepted at a University here where he starts beginning of August.

His current student visa, tied to his High School I suppose, is expiring in June but he is currently on an extension of stay until January 2016.

We got all the relevant papers from the new University to apply for a new student visa in Denmark this summer. My questions are:

Do we have to ask his former High School to cancel his current visa (more correct his Extension of Stay) first? If so, to whom do we represent the cancellation letter and what happens then?

Is it an option not to ask for a cancellation letter but just go to the Embassy in Denmark and apply for a new student visa (considering his old visa is actually expired and he is on an Extension of Stay)?

If the Embassy gives him a new visa, do we risk problems either when at the airport entering Thailand or when he is doing his 90 day's reporting, for not having cancelled his previous Extension of Stay?

I really appreciate your advice on this as I see conflicting information on the internet as the University doesn't seem very clear about this.

Many thanks in advance!!

This line is a bit contusing appears to have the wrong date in it. "His current student visa, tied to his High School I suppose, is expiring in June but he is currently on an extension of stay until January 2016".

I cannot imagine how he could have a valid visa now since it was likely a single entry visa. I assume you meant 2017 not 2016 for the date his extension ends.

If he leaves and re-enters without a re-entry permit his extension will end on the date he leaves the country.

Since his extension will be gone already there will be no problem obtaining a single entry non-ed visa.

Thanks ubonjoe and yes, the date should be 2017! He was on a multiple-entry one year ED visa, but we got an extension to avoid him having to leave every 3 months.

He actually does have a multiple re-entry permit as well. However, can he just choose not to use this re-entry when he enters Thailand again, using instead the new ED visa that he will have obtained in Denmark? Or will it be a problem with a still valid extension of stay in his passport?

Appreciate your help!!

Immigration on entry to the country could insist on using the re-entry permit when he enters the country instead of using the visa.

It would be best to get a letter from the school stating his studies are ending on a date that would need to be on or after the date he goes to immigration to have his extension canceled.

If his multiple visa is still valid he could make a border hop to get a new 90 day entry on or before the enter before date on it after the extension is canceled. Then he could get a single re-entry permit for that 90 day entry and then extend that entry using paperwork from the university after he returns from the trip out.
