Very valuable contribution Johnny, the Nature article shows really the huge step taken by Chinese scientists. Such step made possible by the political willpower of the establishment.

No, made possible by Intellectual Property Theft.

They do very little that is original.

This gentleman has , I hope, has indeed read the article plus he has excellent academic credentials to show for himself in order to qualify to contradict a reputable Science Publication.

Some posters here tried to have an informative post which would ThaiVisa do honor, to no avail.

Yan did graduate and postdoctoral research at Princeton University, New Jersey,


then set up her own laboratory at Tsinghua University in Beijing in 2007 when she was 30 years old, becoming one of the youngest-ever female professors in China. She focused on determining the structures of proteins embedded in cells’ plasma membranes, which are notoriously difficult to solve.


One of her targets was the human glucose transporter GLUT1 — a protein that is essential for supplying energy to cells. Many labs had tried to determine its structure, but the protein had defied their efforts, in part because it readily changes its shape. Yan used a series of tricks to restrict its troublesome movements and finally managed to make crystals and solve its structure in 2014.


“People tried to crystallize GLUT1 for more than 50 years, and all of a sudden, bingo — YAN hit it,” says biochemist Ronald Kaback at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Seriously?

Trieste far exceeded that in 1960. That's 56 years ago. Before they could do designs on a computer, and had no footsteps to follow or designs to steal copy. Back when China was going through one of the famines brought on by their geniuses in charge that killed millions of their people (who they still revere, BTW.).

And it was an Italian craft.

And James Cameron has already been to the Challenger Deep.

On 26 March 2012 (local time), Canadian film director James Cameron made a solo manned descent in the DSV Deepsea Challenger to the bottom of the Challenger Deep.

As I said, the Chinese can do nothing original.

They probably stole the technology from his mission.

We all learned form somewhere, students go all over the world .

The question is what you make of the learned.

How many American, German, Swiss, wherever had studied abroad and tried to crystallize GLUT1 in over 50 years? Hundreds?

Only YAN reached goal. Nothing else matters.

How many American, German, Swiss, wherever had studied abroad and tried to crystallize GLUT1 in over 50 years? Hundreds?

Only YAN reached goal. Nothing else matters.

If would be more impressive if she'd done it without the facilities, peers and resources of an American university.

Because I'm guessing she would not have been able to do it at home.
