UDD wants NHRC to investigate the government over the closure of its centers

BANGKOK: -- The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission today (Thursday) demanding that it investigates the conduct of the government for its order to shut down its centres aimed to prevent cheating in the forthcoming referendum.

The letter of complaint was handed over to commissioner Mrs Angkhana Nilapaichit by a group of core leaders of the UDD led by Jatuporn Promphan.

Jatuporn claimed that, originally, none of the top government officials from the prime minister down to the Election Commission expressed any objection to the UDD’s plan to set up the anti-cheating centres.

But out of a sudden on June 19, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan announced that the centres could not be set up and officials were sent to shut down all the centres which were already operational, said Jatuporn.

The UDD chairman went on saying that, on June 22, 19 UDD core leaders, including himself, were summoned by the authorities to acknowledge the charge of illegal assembly for political objective.

Meanwhile, UDD core leader Natthawut Saikua claimed that several teachers were recruited against their will to clarify to the public about the draft charter despite the fact they were against the draft.

He claimed that none of them had done anything wrong for opening the anti- cheating centres. “We are ready to risk our lives and liberty to press ahead with our cause no matter the consequences. This is not a challenge (to the government),” said Natthawut.

If it were for democracy - but I don't believe them one word when they pretend to be interested in democracy

those clowns are hijacking the word democracy.

They should be called TMRR

Lindsay wow that's a lot of weapons! Gosh. It's amazing how the military has killed more of their supporters than they have. Guess they don't know how to use weapons. The military shoots straight. It's always gotten a higher count of dead Thais historically. Everything is true the military says Lindsay. Everything. If you don't believe me you must not be a real Thai. Everything is true. No lies form Thai generals ever. The GT200 even worked until the UDD snuck on base and pulled a few wires and jinxed them. Believe. Believe.

Smart move. They're trying to drive a wedge between Prayuth and Prawit - deepen the schism between the two.

Smart move.

The only smart move I can recall UDD ever making was when they stopped terrorizing the country after the coup.

Lindsay wow that's a lot of weapons! Gosh. It's amazing how the military has killed more of their supporters than they have. Guess they don't know how to use weapons. The military shoots straight. At least Lindsay came up with some pictures to back up her claims. Everyone knows the redshirts were encouraged to burn BKK by their leaders. Its on tape and can't be denied. Those weapons and the blackshirts.. also proven. Rice scam.. proven.

They are just Thaksins mercenaries and when they were in power they were against all those external organisations and now they love them. They are just hypocrites. (not saying that the other party is better) But who is in power wins all and the other side gets nothing. It was the same when PTP was in power.. nothing was transparent.. no concessions were done they won and took it all. Now they are out of power and crying like babies.

That is what is wrong with Thai politics, the winner takes all without thinking of the looser and without accountability. As long as this stays the same there will always be trouble.

Demanding that National Human Rights Commission of Thailand investigate the conduct of the government

Useless but a demonstrative gesture perhaps intended to get more involvement from the UN HRC. It also has the potential side affect to worsen Thailand's bid for a seat on the UN Security Council. The complaint discredits Prayut's response in February 2016 to the UN review of accusations that the Prayut government shows no real commitment to reversing its abusive rights practices or protecting fundamental freedoms of all groups of people.

The NHRCT has no investigative powers beyond asking politely for people to talk to it. It further has been relegated organizationally from an Independent Institution under the now abolished 2007 Constitution to the auspices of the Office of the Ombudsman for performance and financial review.

In effect the NHRCT will be confined to operate within the policies of the Prayut government. In October 2014 the UN downgraded the NHRCT to "B". As the NHRCT continues to show it is incapable of operating independently to hold the Prayut government accountable for human rights violations, the UN may decertify it.

Gosh I wonder why? ??

#UDD should be on a terrorist list

Very disturbing graphics and a stark reminder to the extreme and violent extent the establishment will do to miantain power. Also a stark reminder of those who sacrify their lives so that Thailand will have democracy. The UDD only want an election while their opposite want a coup and for the establishment to continue to miantain their wealth and their dominance over the poor. The establishment and their bully boys plus the junta agencies will continue to harass and find ways to rid their political enemies. Sad sad Thailand.

Actually, it seems like quite a clever move, It will help widen the schism between the dynamic duo (Dumpy and Grumpy), and it will likely help to get the NHRCT de-registered by the UN. That in it's turn will likely be the nail in the coffin of Thailand's UN Security Council bid. Especially after Prayuth's rant to Ban Ki Moon recently.

Oh dear Mr Prayuth any epic fails lately?

Thailand on the security council... clap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gifcheesy.gifcrazy.gif

Erm no. It's about the UDD, perhaps the distinction is lost on you. Here's a hint. Who do you see in the picture? Thaksin?

It's just that you and your junta-hugger mates seem to see him everywhere else... obsessiveness at it's very best. It's almost like OCD: "must slag off Thaksin at least 5 times every time I log on... gotta do... must do...".

Sad.

I'd like to respond, but well this is Thailand, and the truth is illegal at times. What can I say. It's not worth arguing on this topic in a land where lies are willingly accepted as truth by so many. If you speak too much, you will lose your voice too. robblok, if you're Thai it's easier for me to understand you and the others who argue so vehemently against the supposed 'threats' but if you aren't you really have a lot to learn about Thai history.

Maybe. But i'm not delusional

Gotta slag off Thaksin. must slag him off, gotta slag him off. I need my fix, I can't get comfy if I don't get my fix. Dubai, Dubai, vote-buying... No that's no good.. Thaksin is the devil,,, That's better, Thaksin caused the drought... feeling good now... Thaksin caused the floods... better and better.

Is it raining again? Where's my Thaksin doll and those needles? The long ones. Wah blah gah blah. I bet he can feel them going in. Yes, for sure, here's one in his face, take that you demon... Wah blah gah blah.

Do you people really not realise how little you know about Thailand and how deranged you seem?

Something interesting in the news related to this today.. Suthep, that 'glorious' PDRC guy turned monk turned basically PDRC guy again, is going to tout the benefits of the referendum on his Facebook account. Since no one is stopping him, Jatuporn supposedly has decided to do a short talk about the referendum as well on his Facebook every day now to see if there is equality.
