So what did the Brexit supporters gain?

A lot of folks don't seem to grasp the magnitude of the change that has taken place. Successive UK governments, over several decades, have sought to make the UK an attractive place to invest (low taxes, flexible labour laws, light regulation etc).

At a stroke all that has been lost. The UK is probably about the least attractive place to invest in Europe right now. Sterling is at a 31 year low against the US$ and the FTSE 250 (a more accurate barometer of UK business than the 100) has suffered its biggest loss in value ever.

This is much more than a few currency speculators manipulating the currency.

The effects of all this are very wide ranging - company values (capitalisation) and dividends are lower and the cost of US$ and Euro-denominated loans is higher.

If the UK government can negotiate some kind of 'Associate Membership' of the EU, retaining access to the Single Market, then maybe things will stabilise. If, on the other hand, the UK leaves the Single Market and reverts to WTO rules then that would be 'pressing the red button'. The UK would become a hugely unattractive place to invest in the short-medium term and the GBP would fall off a cliff.

I think the UK has suddenly become a much more attractive place to live.

If I didn't enjoy living in Thailand so much I would certainly now consider living there.

Pretty good and fair assessment on why people voted leave. Didn't see too many card waving racists there…a good mic of respondents….young, old….and lawful immigrants too.

They interview a few remain supporters too….those were almost 100% young students in uni…probably devastated that they can't travel freely to Europe….have they not heard of other places to work?

With my Aussie dollars, I'm certainly considering buying my books again from Amazon UK as opposed to Amazon US. biggrin.png

why don't you tell these young people of all the other places you know where they don't need a work permit or a permit can't be refused?

one stat I heard was that the total money wiped off the Uk markets is equivalent to ALL 40 YEARS of UK contributions to the EU.!!!???

Markets are already back to where they were.

Nothing wiped off.

More evidence of how your post is tripe.

"only" half of all UK property funds froze redemptions. so what if you need the redemptions to pay for your living expenses. go on a diet. diets are good for your health!

and if you are not willing to fast or need the money for other purposes just sell your holdings with a loss. the money itself is not lost. it still exists... not in your but in other people's pockets whistling.gif

Many property funds have been giant ponzi schemes for quite a while.

Best to avoid them altogether IMHO. Others may disagree.

Incredibly naive to think that Brexit will alter the number of 'illegals' wanting to come to the UK. That was a line spun during the referendum, but it was a huge deception. The only way to stop illegals is massively increase expenditure on border security.

Or reduce the value of the pound until the refugees all decide to live in Sweden and Germany.

An asinine comment without a shred of truth. Do you even understand what a Ponzi scheme is?

you make a stupid claim and when that claim is challenged by a simple question you tuck your tail between the legs and try to divert with an irrelevant and lame comment.

a true acolyte of Farage and Johnson! laugh.png

note: the EU or any other treaty does not provide jobs but freedom of movement in a huge area of many jurisdictions providing job and residence opportunities.

Total nonsense, stop the Free Handouts and they wont have any reason to come. They could pour into my country.its EU. but they get nothing, so they dont come. QED. We have some Genuine Old Portuguese Angolan Refugees but they work or Starve. Their Kids go away ,dont stay generally, mainly to England or any other idiot nation.

How much does the UK pay to the "illegals & invaders" that you hate so much? Just asking as I don´t know that specific figure .... Thank you!

Another know-nothing chump post.

UK is a magnet for illegals because its so easy to live below the radar. Four main reasons they come:

1. No ID cards - unlike other European countries.

2. Sloppy enforcement of employment law, meaning its easy to find black market employment.

3. English language

4. Strong existing religious and social infrastructure.

If you think Brexit will reduce the number of illegal migrants heading for the UK you are in for an almighty shock, if anything it will likely increase it.

I suspect you are not from the UK nor do you have much knowledge of the country, otherwise you wouldn't be posting such claptrap.

How daft and ill-informed can you get? We actually made money out of EU workers - they paid taxes NI etc.

..and most immigrants in the end pay their way as they are keen to work.

A profoundly ignorant assessment - of the situation. 2 pounds is worth more than one pound...so what?

The only means by which I see Brexit being able to reduce immigration is by wrecking the UK economy.

The UK will not be able to negotiate access to the EU markets without accepting the the EU rules on freedom of movement.

Can anyone be so stupid to base an analysis on this photo?....and to think it has anything to do with EU membership - I really think stupid doesn't fully cover the extent of ignorance that is required for that.

But its one hell of a lot easier if immigrants are not automatically allowed in, but have to prove that they are entering as a result of being offered a job..

The world is a big place.

Exactly.

Before 'free movement' was allowed we were still able to apply for jobs around the world.

If the company/organisation offered us a job - we were able to move to that country to take up the position.

How does China manage to access the EU markets then? I'd definitely vote to stay in if I had the right to live in China.

And Taiwan, Vietnam and Korea ...... have I left out anyone that has free access to the EU markets?

I'm tired of this argument.

The poor EU immigrants are taking jobs from the lowest level of Brit. workers - and reducing the wages at the bottom end. They're paying no more in tax and NI that Brit. workers would be paid, but (again) the easy availability of poor EU workers are keeping wages paid (at the bottom end of the 'market') down. Plus, too many are paid less than the minimum wage - but its still FAR more than they would be paid in their own countries. As long as they are prepared to accept squalid conditions for a short period of time (and its often only a short period of time), they can send money back to their family back home.

Good for them, but not good for the Brit. workers at the bottom of the pyramid.

So, are you saying if Britain achieved a level of access to the European market equivalent to that of China as of today, you´d be happy????

Well, the last time I listend to employers back in the UK they said that without EU migrants they could not fill all available positions, especially not in the "low-level" jobs since too many Brits would rather be on the dole and abuse the welfare system than getting their hands dirty in low-paid jobs.

To be honest, I think to vote OUT was a poor decision. It was the wrong decision, imho. Mind you, now that the majority voted out I cannot wait for the government to pull the trigger and to get out. The sooner the better because the ongoing "discussions" (claims and counter-claims) on forums such as TV are getting on my tits. I want Britain out asap and then we will see how it pans out over the next decade or 2.

(The above quote to be read in the voice of Homer Simpson....).

You seem to have zero understanding of economics and trade.

None of the countries you mention have 'free access' to the EU single market.

If the UK had to trade with the EU on the same basis as those countries then within six months most of the City of London would have shut down, millions would be out of a job and 1GBP would be worth about 50 cents.

I think it was Churchill who said that the most powerful argument against democracy was to spend five minutes with the average voter. This thread seems to strongly support that setiment.
