Hungry monkeys coming out to beg for food from passing vehicles

AMNART CHAROEN: -- Motorists driving along the Don Chaopoo national park road in Phana district of Amnart Charoen province are advised to drive carefully after hundreds of hungry monkeys coming out of jungles and sitting on roadside begging for food from passing vehicles.

Accordingly to Thairath Online, the mayor of Phana Municipality Mr Pachern Inchan said there are about 4,000 macque monkeys in the national park, and it is the duty of the park to take care of all these monkeys.

But due to insufficient food in the wilderness, the park and local people and tourists would provide them some food.

However still there are many which did not get the food will come out of the jungles and sit by the roadside begging for food from passing vehicles.

He said each year a hundred of these animals died from passing vehicles, prompting the park and the municipality to put up signboards to warn motorists of monkeys by the roadsides, and advise them to drive carefully.

He said normally the monkeys would come out late in the day, begging for food.

But some also went to nearby paddy fields and uproot the plants to eat, causing trouble to farmers.

you should never feed wildlife - how did this happen? Where did they learn this behaviour and why? What is wrong with their environment?

What's wrong with the world is the question and most know the answer. It's all going fast. Human population has always been the problem. We ruined nature's balance and there will be forever too many monkeys unless humans control them. It's all screwed up. People in the world shouldn't react to these events as they are not abnormal in the new world of man. Expect it.

Are they any more "hungry" than the average forest dwelling monkey?

Or have they learned that it's an easier way to get food, that they get more of it, and that it tastes nicer (lots of yummy sugar, etc)?

Those cute monkeys are vicious, thieving little creatures. The best way to deal with them is to convince the locals that they are gourmet food and delicious to eat.

Gosh, I guess some people find it entertaining.

what is your point? Apart from stating the obvious?

I don't think you understand the relationship between food supply and wild animal population. most populations self- regulate according to food supply - the females will come on heat less etc etc....the animals in the temple are captive and cannot fend for themselves or behave in a "natural" way - they have learned to rely on handouts from humans - the monks, in their infinite wisdom have decided to stop feeding their charges claiming poverty - as monasteries run entirely on donations it would seem likely that they are still capable of getting donations for these creatures' food or at least could organise some from the many organisations that exist to help animals. Of course if they just want the animals to starve to create a bad image of the authorities, then there is nothing to be done.

On the other hand if wild animals - e.g. those monkeys become accustomed to being fed by tourists etc then it interferes with the natural habit and processes that maintain the population of monkeys at sustainable numbers and can lead to conflict as they stray nearer and nearer human habitation in search of food.

What's obvious is that your whining is not going to change anyone's behavior. Or did you think it would?
