Brexit: why British expats are worried

Just before the vote, I watched an interview of 4 Brit farmers. All were going to vote 'remain'. They can't (so they said) exist without the help from Brussels. They reckon they will go under.

Was this the usual 4 (broke) Brit farmers, all driving their brand new top of the line Range Rovers?

There is a big Norwegian community living in Spain, many of them are working in bars and other businesses. They have the same rights as EU members and healthcare is also provided, thanks to the agreement with EU .

So I don't see the problem here. UK just need to negotiate and get ready to sign a new agreement.

What you don't say, and may not know, is that Norway agreed to be governed by the same rules as members of the EU. That includes immigration and free movement of labor for all EU country members. The difference is, Norway gets no say in creating these rules and regulations.

Is that right? Not very clever then are they, these Norwegians?

Which would be really really funny.... Voting to "leave" because you did not want to be "ruled from Belgium" by undemocratic forces -- yet ending up in exactly the same situation with much less "democtratic" say in the arrangements... Wouldn't that be a hoot!

Having seen Boris's Telegraph article, it seems to be exactly where we're headed.

I have no idea where this is heading. Neither does the rest of the World and this is the problem.

Cameron is an utter disaster.

And today the regions who voted for BREXIT woke up to realise that all their subsidies and incentives from the EU will be cut off. Now they are screaming about it. Silly sods. You can't eat sovereignty chum.

You may have no idea now that the Brexit team's bland assurances against the plentiful warnings has predictably turned into a sham, but the rest of us aren't exactly surprised at the cluelessness of the Out supporters now standing in the middle of the road in front of the traffic headlights barrelling towards them in the form of the market rout. But the markets are just going to run you over. Brexit turning the UK into roadkill. Stick the donkey's tail on the Brexit leaders where it belongs and all those fraudulent Union Jack wavers. wai2.gif

Which may well turn out to be the case for the Brits. Who will have had even less of an excuse since the Norwegians did warn them.

I recall an assurance that these funds would continue to be paid from the £350250m a week we would not be sending to the EU. It's perfectly legitimate to remind the politicians of the assurance.

Actually, I believe the signs were saying that it was 350 million pounds per week. Technically speaking it's true that the UK sends the EU about that amount. What wasn't said was that the UK also receives funds from the EU. The net amount the UK sends to the EU was about 150 million pounds weekly. Anybody betting that the Tories will be devoting that cash to the NHS? That's a bet I'd take.

The signs gave the £350m. The rebate brings it down to about £250m, may be a bit more. Now, if the EU were divesting £100m a week in the UK, then that is money that the UK government will be honour-bound to spend in grants etc. to replace the EU grants. Now, I'm not sure how much we would have to pay for access to the single market - someone has to pay for the Brussels gravy train.

Btw, are you British? If so, do you have so little confidence in your own country and it's people?

How much do the Chinese have to pay to access the single market?

I ask because almost everything for sale in Europe seems to have been made in China.

Britain could offer to pay the same!

I'm British and I have little confidence in the nationalistic, xenophobic, and plain ignorant views expressed by many Brexiters and exemplified by someone like Farage.

Hopefully common sense and humanity will prevail.

Chinese citizens don't need to work in a country they will soon almost own, given the way things are headed:

Owning a (mortgaged) house in the UK that is worth more than a million Pounds (on paper) is passe any more and long ago ceased to constitute real wealth, China doesn't have that problem.

Shows how much you know. Do a little research about the Chinese property bubble.

Aha, I see. So it's only the remainers who have common sense and a sense of humanity. For a second there, I thought you were Belgian.

Brexit means that the British lose rights to claim Americans are dumber...?

http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/british-lose-right-to-claim-that-americans-are-dumber?intcid=obnetwork

You are obviously a dumb American!!!!!!

I don't know. We get a kick out of watching Brits pee in their pants over the prospect that they can spend their money on themselves rather than fat cats in Brussels.

Payments to the EU, immigration and a nanny state have driven the UK's debt to be about the same as that of the US as a percentage of GDP. Yet the much smarter Brits are forever talking about how the US is broke while predicting its collapse.

The UK was a strong and powerful country before it joined the EU. Now it's a broke-ass country playing the part of the EU's beotch. Now its culture is rapidly shifting due to massive immigration by people who can't speak English and who won't accept British law or customs.

Let the peeing in the pants continue and whatever you do, give your lives back to your masters in Brussels.

Cheers.

Apart from EU nationals, I'm sure there are a lot of non-Europeans working / living in Spain, paying taxes etc. Do they not get healthcare or do they have to go private?

I wonder what the requirement is for non EU nationals to retire in Spain

I think the British government needs to start escorting foreigners to the channel ferry ASAP.

Lets get rid of them all. Tourist VISAs for two weeks in any one year, but they need to apply

well in advance and convince an Eco they have a reason to return home and finances to support them while in the UK.

We might also like to think about only British citizens being allowed to own land in the UK and a list of protected occupations

that only the British can work in. Almost forgot, British business have to have a 51% British ownership.

The UK was a strong and powerful country before it joined the EU.

indeed! it was the EU that forced the British Empire to grant sovereignty to many parts of the realm and forego the riches and wealth of now immensely prosperous nations who dominate the global economy with their wealth of minerals, ores, precious metals, agricultural products (just to name a few).

think of what impact on UK finances rubies and emeralds from Burma (aka Myanmar). rice from India, textiles from Pakistan, gold and platinum from Bangla Desh, sheep and kiwis from New Zealand, roos from Australia, yam and cassava from Nigeria would make.

like in good old imperial times one Pound Sterling would buy 2.80 US-Dollars or 10 €URos (the equivalent of 20 Deutsch Marks) enabling the Chancellor of the Exchequer to drive around with lorries filled with cash and distributing the cash instead of H.M. Revenue Service levying taxes.

Was that around same time when the people in your country received their wages in wheelbarrows?

To the poster who said that expat Brits are on a fixed pension, never increased and so on..........that is NOT so.

Last month I received a letter telling me that from April, my pension would be increased by 50p per week, providing of course, that there is no change in my circumstances.
