Hi all,

Boy, this is needed!

I arrived in Toronto yesterday, got an sms about roaming and I deleted it. Now, it seems I need to receive some sms thingies sent by Apple (so I can confirm something and get my iPad working again).

I have entered a variety of codes like *125*1# but always get "result unknown". If I text from another phone to ais, could this trigger roaming - what to text?

Thanks.

Do you have the roaming facility? I have it and AIS implemented it for me. It has to be activated in their computer system. At the time it cost Baht 1,600. If you are not in the system as having Roaming you cant switch it on. If you do have it then it is automatically on.

My experience has been that, if you're in Singapore, at least, that if you just respond to the AIS sms, and say, send an sms to Thailand, you're on roaming automatically. But I concerned about where I am now. Cheers.

Maybe I'll go to a Toronto 'Genius' place here, tell them my sad story and all will be well. Cheers again.

Good find Aachen. I had been on the page but didn't drill down to this. It's rug burn at the Apple store for me!

Assuming you received an SMS on arrival in Toronto, my best guess would be that IR is enabled on your number.

What is the make/model of your phone?

Are you able to register on, and get a signal from Bell Mobility, Rogers or Telus?

Do you know if you registered for international roaming?

You could try:

https://eservice.ais.co.th/eServiceWeb

email to [email protected]

*125 or *125*1#

You could sign up for a free Google Voice or Talkatone number, install the associated apps., then receive SMSes.

Obviously buying a local SIM would work as well, or just "borrow" a friends number to receive the SMS.

Lots of stuff, Mtis2005. I'm still jet lagged so will check it out tomorrow. Google Voice here I come, but maybe after my jet lag, tomorrow. Cheers.

AIS roaming *129*1# to turn off, *129*2# to turn back on. You usually have to wait five to 10 minutes for an SMS confirmation.

I'm not 100% sure this will work outside of Thailand. I always do it at the airport.

AIS roaming *129*1# to turn off, *129*2# to turn back on.

That's to enable/disable mobile data. http://www.ais.co.th/roaming/3g-postpaid/close-open-data.aspx?language=en

Some recommend disabling mobile data directly with the service provider if traveling internationally, to avoid incurring sticker shock on return. That assumes you don't want to subscribe to a special international data package, or disable mobile data in your phone. And some people in Thailand also do this to avoid unwanted data charges.

Self-Activate/Deactivate Data Service

Easily self-activate or deactivate data connections to control your data roaming costs and prevent your smartphone or tablet from auto-data connections
To deactivate data serviceDial *129*1# call
To activate data serviceDial *129*2# call
To check data activation statusDial *129# call
Please wait for SMS notifications of data service activation/deactivation confirmation.
Good to know :
Activation and deactivation of the data service will be effective on both domestic and overseas use.
Some apps on phones, smartphones, or tablets may have auto-data connections feature. To prevent unintentional use, the user should deactivate the data service when not in use.
If you have deactivated data service on your device and you want to reactivate it, you first have to activate data service then restart your device.
1SIM2Numbers customers can also use this service and it will only have an effect on the number you used to activate.
Prepaid Multi SIM customers cannot use this service.

*125 is used to enable international roaming. http://www.ais.co.th/roaming/prepaid/registration.aspx?language=en

International Roaming is a service that helps you make/receive calls, send/receive SMS/MMS, and connect to Data (3G/EDGE/GPRS) via phones, smartphones, or tablets. You can surf the internet, send/receive emails, upload/download photos, access song/music streaming, stay connected with social media , and chat anywhere with your Thailand phone number. You will not miss any chance to connect with people across the globe via the quality AIS network.

If you are an AIS customer and have already subscribed to the International Roaming service, your service will be automatically upgraded to AIS 3G 2100.
How to subscribe to international roaming How to subscribe

If you want to activate Data Roaming service, dial *129*2# Free!

Here's an update. In Toronto just now, I called Apple Support, spoke with the help desk in Texas, tried all sorts of things to enter my apple id and password - but always got stuck because a confirmation code was sent to "an alternate device" - my non-smart AIS phone. Passed off to the supervisor who said she couldn't do anything because I had bought all of my devices in Thailand. I was toast. She was going to transfer me to somebody in Thailand - Apple or AIS, I don't know, then the line went dead. So I re-tried the help process. My saviour is named Fred, at the Florida help desk; he had me turn off the two-step authentication (where I had to answer "hints" and had to guess my birthday because, years ago, I guess I got the day wrong), and now, I'm golden. Before I leave Thailand the next time I'll check with AIS ahead of time.

Thanks all.
