Kasikorn Research hails Thailand's move up to Tier 2 on US Watch List

BANGKOK, 1 July 2016 (NNT) – Kasikorn Research Center has hailed the US State Department’s decision to elevate Thailand from Tier 3 to Tier 2 on its annual Trafficking in Persons Report, calling it an acknowledgement of the Kingdom’s hard work and foreseeing positive economic results.

Kasikorn Research has let on it believes Thai fisheries exports to the US will grow positively for the first time in 4 years, projecting 3-5 percent growth or 1.32-1.35 billion USD. Apart from the positive push from Thailand’s elevation to Tier 2, the center also pointed to the nation’s increased production of shrimp this year, which soared by up to 15.4 percent. Thai shrimp is in high demand from the US.

However, the center reminded that the US report is exclusive from the European Union’s Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing standards and does not immediately remove any blocks put in place by the nation’s continued Yellow Card status from the EU. The union is evaluate Thailand’s fisheries again in 1-2 months.

Nonetheless, the Thai Shipper’s Council has expressed belief that the improvement in the US report will aid Thailand when it is evaluated once again by the EU, calling the latest development a step in the right direction but noting that significant improvements can only be expected over the next 1-2 years.

What have they really achieved besides charge a few low branches of the tree. If talk with little action or intention is success, then they are very sucessful.
