PHUKET: Fishermen from Krabi returned to shore yesterday disappointed with the meager quantities caught on the first day of fishing following a three-month hiatus.

Yesterday was the first day that large fishing vessels were allowed to return to fish in the Andaman Sea after 4,696 square kilometers between Phuket and Trang were closed off so as not to deplete fish stocks during the spawning season from April 1 to June 30.

More than 10 boats in Krabi returned to shore much earlier than usual with boat operators complaining that hardly any fish were caught.

Krabi Fishery Office head Saen Sringam expressed surprise, but advised fishermen to be patient.

“Please do not worry as it is just the beginning of the season. The monsoon, strong waves and rain can all contribute to the scarcity of fish," said Mr Saen.

They will get a great deal scarcer if over fishing is not stopped.

Krabi Fishery Office Head love his answer must be related to the TAT lady and the guy that makes all the financial pontificating about the future. This warning bell has been rung world wide for decades and ignored. As ye harvest so shall ye reap simple.

What a headline.

You & your elders have been raping the fishing beds for decades & now you bleat?????

Grow up & use your common sense

If I was a fish, I would be bloody scarce too, swim the opposite direction to those who rape the sea.

Sorry,,Common Sense not available,,

I see the same thing when I'm snorkeling.

They're out there nightly vacuuming the ocean of fish. Of course the fisheries are mismanaged, TIT. Thais never do anything until they have to...or it's too late. It's now too late.

do they honestly believe fish will be plentiful in 3 months time? time to change careers if they haven't noticed...
