NMLT submits letter to UN regarding current political situation

BANGKOK, 5 July 2016 (NNT) - The National Municipal League of Thailand (NMLT) has submitted a letter to the United Nations (UN), saying there is a third party trying to instigate social unrest.

NMLT President Kriangkrai Poomlaojang said the letter was meant to inform the UN about the current political situation, as well as the presence of a political group that is attempting to foster dissidence.

According to Mr. Kriangkrai, members of the group have been orchestrating student demonstrations in an attempt to force the government's hand to take actions that will be condemned by the international community.

The NMLT President claimed that the Thai people are committed to cooperating with the government and moving towards national stability, while this political group is doing the opposite. He cautioned the UN not to trust this group and to listen to what the Thai people really want for their country.

The NMLT President asked all political groups to stop their campaigning and allow the country to move forward, especially with the constitutional referendum. He said these groups should instead offer ways for political reconciliation and promote national growth.

Oh, didums. "We wanna have our cake and eat it! If you see any people saying bad words about us then you can't get angry if we imprison them. We warned you so you can't say anything, okay? Deal? Yes."

They are offering ways, they want elections and democracy returned to the people but the military are not interested they simply gag those voices through intimidation and by arresting them.

The UN already know what the public want, they want elections, democracy, freedom of speech and no more censorship.

Yeah because "Democracy" (aka the Taksin dictatorship) worked so well in the past.

Thailand is much safer and much better off under the current situation. Long may it last.

I hope we never again see the red terrorists running around the streets burning down buildings and applauding the blowing up of small children with rpg's etc.

Anyone that thinks the vote buying Taksin dictatorship was even close to democracy needs to open their eyes or take another look back at the actions of the previous regime.

no they don't care about elections because there is no better alternative to elect. They know the only choice is to get the old gangsters back.

It's just exactly this group who make a lot of noise to incite unrest and get their snout back in the trough, as somebody said before.

As if they would care for democracy. They want elections because they hope there are still enough of their brainwashed followers

and some who are easy prey for their demagogic seduction - they also seem to have some experience in cheating about the results.

The NMLT are absolutely right

NMLT's letter seems to go far beyond its historical purpose:1

Promote cooperation and exchange between the members, to act as the representative organisation for municipalities all over the country and to promote quality standards in public administration and management. There is also a political element, with the League being keen on promoting the development of local political systems at the municipal level and to lobby for further decentralisation and more responsibility at the local level.

To achieve these objectives, the League commissions studies and research on technical and judicial matters and facilitates the exchange of ideas and experiences amongst its members. Capacity building measures are offered for municipal executives and officials, joint activities to strengthen local government are organised with international organisations.

Now NMLT seems to see itself as defender against certain political organizations' actions.

How often do you ever see or hear about anything really good for the Thai people being done at the local government level??? IME, not very often. Here in BKK, the local authorities are &%$#@s.

Usually, it's more about failed, delayed or poorly built public works projects, said projects once built failing, fire and building safety regulations not being enforced, development projects being built without legal permission or not in accord with their approvals, businesses operating without their required licenses, expensive survey/fact-finding trips to beach resorts or foreign countries, etc etc etc.

Perhaps this group would be better served getting its membership's house in order first.

The public would probably like less corrupt sleazeball lying cheating criminals involved in politics too. Along with real justice for all, equal and fair with real enforcement.

Don't hold your breath.

Go gentle on him after all he was appointed last year by the junta and just earning his keeps. Anyway, this letter is comic relief for the UN. They must be bemused that NMLT who champion elected office bearers is speaking out for this regime who snatch power from elected government.

Quite right. 'If you dog eating morons can't be trusted to vote for any candidate from any party you wish as long as it is the one we want, then you shan't be allowed elections.'

Bad news and hate to burst your bubble. Between an elected government and a government who took power by force, who you think the UN will listen to. Another exercise in futility to improve the already damaged image by this junta government on the world stage.

No need to buy votes when you can take over the country at gunpoint. Clearly a much better solution.

6 out of 10 Thais still prefer the taste of red sweets over yellow if given a free choice.

Really? Or maybe Thais prefer anything sweet and have no objection to the pointing of silent guns in preference to fearing bombs and bullets on the streets?

Establishing an acceptable degree of social equity in the face of the prior historical system is not an overnight possibility. The wardens of apathy are being displaced incrementally to avoid extreme confrontational disruption. That may be to the dissatisfaction of those who would prefer the retention of the status quo both internally and externally of Thailand.

The critics who believe they are voicing opinion based on democratic origins need not only understand they are fundamentally deluded but to appreciate the fact that Thailand has never experienced actual democracy. The expectation that a society that generation by generation which has previously adhered to a system of birthright subjigation and in recent decades has socially rapidally devolved generally into a poorly understood capitalist anarchy should now automatically awaken is extrordinarily ignorant. No surprise in that because the majority of those critics who are resident are here to take advantage of exactly that!

How many of those who deride the current attempts in Thailand have ever made any effort to make meaningful attempts to correct issues in the place of origin? Or is it easier to apathetically deny and instead find some critical opinion of another location in which to languish in an attitude of superiority?bah.gif

If the NMLT were serious about this matter, they might write instead to the NCPO, and ask for a reversal of the decision to bar international election monitors from observing the referendum.

As it is, the referendum is likely to be declared "flawed" by a variety of international bodies, for the very reason that it is not under independent observation, and the fairness can not be adequately judged.

Not that the NCPO gives a damn.

Not as willfully ignorant as the expectation that the Army generals at the service of the elite have any other intention than to, if not return to the sakdina system, then to preserve its privileged position as long as humanly possible at the expense of the ordinary population. A frank and free discussion of democracy, or the lack of it, in Thailand is not possible on this forum or indeed in the country as the embedded laws remove from the discussion the top tier of privilege and power, however an Army coup has never been a suitable engine for progress towards democratic ideals or improved equality.
