Toyota to shed 800-900 jobs among temporary staff

BANGKOK: -- Informed industry source said that between 800-900 jobs for the wage earners who represent about 40 percent of Toyota’s work force will be shed under the “Farewell with Hearts” programme.

The programme opened on Monday and will last about a week for the temporary employees who are paid wages on monthly basis not with monthly salaries to volunteer to leave the company.

In return, the company will pay them severance pay, compensation in accordance with the years of employment and a special bonus with a sweet-deal condition that they will be the first group to be rehired once the economy picks up and the company is back in good shape.

The employees who are offered the voluntary resignation programme are mostly those working at Samrong, Gateway and Bangchan assembly plants.

Despite their temporary status, several of them have served in the company for more than ten years, said the source.

Those who signed up to join the programme will effectively leave the company as the management is afraid that some of them may not be happy with the programme and may protest.

Sounds all sweet but the end result is some folks are going to be unemployed and still needing to pay bills and live.

It may not be as bad as you think.

Those who have worked for more than one year will get at least 3 months salary. More than 3 years, 6 months or more. I believe the max is about 12 months, but I know of cases where companies have paid more.

It is generally quite easy for unskilled and semi-skilled workers to find new employment, although due to being new hires they might earn less and receive fewer holidays.

Assuming they do find work (I wouldn't wait for Toyota to re-hire), the 3+ month cash injection could make a big difference to many families, especially if they use it wisely (yes, I know what the chances of that are).

another issue that has not been mensioned here, is what has happened in all other counties that have built cars, what will Toyota do with the acres of unsold new cars, and who pays for that loss?

I see the Thai economy is still on the up-tick then...

Moving forward...

Well, I think it's going in exactly the right direction, though I doubt the illegal junta government does. But then my reasons are different from theirs.

maybe if they lowered the prices of their Revos which are about 100+k overpriced against the Triton which has a much higher bhp engine.............Ill be getting a new one soon, service has always been good from them though (Toyota)

'Farewell with Hearts' programme? What a joke. Even trying to brand this mass exodus? Typical Thailand.

Just another foreign entity leaving the kingdom for better offers from the likes of Vietnam or Cambodia. Better tax breaks, free electricity, and no threat of more manmade environmental debacles like the flooding of 2011.

Toyota will shed about 40% of its Thai workforce.

This comes only as a denial of reality by the Government

October 2015: Toyota trimmed its own sales target for 2015 by about 5.4%.

November 2015: The Thai automobile industry is expected grow only slightly next year as consumers' purchasing power continues to be weak, despite the government's injection of huge budgets into infrastructure. Car sales haven’t really improved, and this may continue through next year as the government plans to increase car taxes.

January 2016: China’s economic slowdown is affecting its Asian neighbors and hitting vehicle sales in Thailand, with Toyota Motor Corp. expecting industry demand to fall for a fourth straight year. Toyota expects Thai vehicle sales to drop 9% in 2016.

Maybe it’s time that Prayut explain to China of Thailand’s need for a sustainable economy.
