LONDON: -- Liam Fox is the first name to be scratched from the list of people fighting to become the next leader of the UK Conservative Party.

In the first of a series of votes between five contenders, former Defence Minister Fox gathered the support of just 16 fellow Tory MPs.

Leading the field is Home Secretary Theresa May, who secured 165 votes.

Sixty six Conservative MPs voted for Andrea Leadsom in this first round, putting her in second place behind May.

Stephen Crabb, who only attracted the support of 34 MPs, announced he was leaving the contest and endorsed Theresa May.

A second ballot is scheduled for Thursday, before the contest becomes a two-horse race with the winner set to be known in September.

i wonder what provoked some MPs to vote for Gove other than friends prepared to stick by him ?

It must be clear that he's not the man to win a general election for the party as the public's perception of him is less than complimentary and I doubt there's much in the way of trust.

Yes most of us have a low opinion of politicians and how they operate but Gove took it to a new low.

Who knows.

Of the 5 candidates that are standing, not one of them would get my vote.

A little bit of simple background digging will reveal why.

So she has no other incomes coming from anywhere except as an MP. mmmmm! I find this to be astoundingfacepalm.gif. Like all politicians there are always backhanders and sweeteners somewhere. Probably in other family members names

It is as clear as the imprint of Obama’s shoe on the shiny seat of Cameron’s trousers that Britain will not be allowed to leave Europe.

The US has more to lose from a Brexit (TTIP, for starters) than even the untaxed, feather-bedded fat cats who run the EU's glorified Ponzi scheme. And when the world’s greatest superpower not only objects but sends its President to personally deliver a kick in the pants – well, you know they mean business.

Cameron’s oily televised assurances that the referendum result will be honoured are not worth the paper they are not written on - and about as believable as the reasons he gave for not immediately resigning the Premiership and dragging his heels over signing the independence deal.

.

He is clearly playing for enough time to bring the revolting peasants to heel. In the coming months our Government, the EU and the US will join forces with the intention of inflicting enough economic pain on the British people to force a second referendum and reverse the original result.

As for the so-called Tory election leadership fight, this is obviously just theatre. Remain campaigner Teresa May has been Cameron's successor in all but name ever since the Tory leadership's decision to bow to Wall Street and the White House (which are, of course, the same thing) rather than to the will of the British people.

One can imagine the kind of deal the vicar's daughter would negotiate if push came to shove. No wonder Nigel has opted for pipe and slippers. It’s just a pity so few of the rest of us without the benefit of his generous EU parliamentary salary can afford to do the same.
