If immigration at the airport demands to see 20,000 baht but I cannot provide it, what happens?

How do you get your luggage?

Will they let you go to an ATM?

If the funds cannot be acquired, you must buy a ticket to your home country and until able to do so, you remain in detention?

They can deny you entry, visa or not, they just will not let you out the airport and ultimately you will be put back on a plane at your expense from whence you came

The chance of being asked to show the 20k baht at a airport is small if you have a valid visa.

You can also show the equivalent of 20k baht in another currency. They likely would allow you go to a ATM if asked to show it.

Understood, thanks.

I am a multi year serial back to back TV runner, so eventually this situation may happen.

What happens if I am unable to show proof of funds?

Must I purchase ticket to my home country?

Have you ever heard of such a situation happening for someone in my spot?

Thanks

They are probably only going to ask to see 20K if they are looking for a reason to deny entry. That has been known to happen to those overusing the visa exempt scheme, but it's highly unlikely to happen to someone holding a valid tourist visa.

  • It is 10K min for visa exempt entry and 20K min for visa entry.
  • Cash in baht or the equivalent in another currency, and travellers cheques only.
  • If you can't show proof of funds you could be denied entry under Section 12 of the Immigration Act.
  • You would be asked to leave and, usually, would be able to buy a ticket anywhere.
  • You would be in the custody of immigration until an onward flight was booked at which point you would, probably, be handed over into the custody of the airline.

I did a visa run by air to Singapore and a return flight the next day expecting to get a 30day upon arrival, except immigration asked where was my ticket to exit the country. I did not have one and 2,500 baht later I had to purchase a ticket to exit Thailand. I never used the ticket because at that time I finally got my B VISA from the school.

Now, I'm on a retirement visa and just provided my yearly income statement from my Embassy.

The rules for VISA's have always been on the books and finally enforcing them which I agree. I've seen to many over stayers some don't make problems others, well, you them.

I wish my country the USA would enforce the law and maybe just maybe we wouldn't have the situation we have now. The 5 requirements: WHY are you here? Where are you staying and if a hotel the owner registered or be fined like here. Name of friend/relative and verify. Proof of 5,000USD (NOT CHEAP THERE). Exit ticket.

And with today's computers flag any people who haven't exited on their visa date or get an extension. 100USD A day overstay fine.

But, dreams never come true.

He would also like to know how how he can retrieve his luggage, I preasume he could as it is the vicinity of the airport.

Am I missing something here? If you haven't got the cash just get the required amount in any currency before you fly, or are you saying that you do not have sufficient funds? If you do not have funds why fly in the first place?

I do not have sufficient funds.

Why fly in? I find the bus uncomfortable and dangerous.

I do not have sufficient funds.

You could have that -fund- problem already when you apply for a Visa. rolleyes.gif

Anyway, its a very tight living, but you are, as I think already used to that, if you cannot get 20 - 30.000 Baht together for Visa and Visa-trip that are required.

Yo have nobody who could borrow you the 20.000 for some days? whistling.gif

4 Visa trips and 4 extensions cost you more then 20.000+ Baht a year, for a similar price there are other possibilities too, I hear. smile.png

There are money exchange and ATM before getting to immigration. And if you are so smart to ask these questions why the hell don't you carry 1000 dollar to show them if they ask for it?

I arrived in May 2016 on a flight from Vietnam and got a visa exempt entry for 30 days at arrival immigration.

As I said above, i was wheeled through in my wheelchair

Not asked to show funds.....but if I had been I had my Thai bank book showing over 400,000 Baht in it.

I suspect they would have accepted that as proof of funds.

Okay, it may not be fair, but they do pick and choose at the arrival immigration booth.

By the way, if you have ever got a tourist visa in Penang, Malaysia there is a sign in English posted there where you pay the fee for that visa which tells you that crossing from Malaysia into Thailand by a land border you may be required to show cash when crossing the border into Thailand.

Most people stand right next to that sign to pay for their visa and never even see it.

I have a foreign derived passive income stream. I just will not have 1K liquid cash at this particular date in time when entering the country.
