Give Offerings or Pass the Doobie, Thailand’s Monks Misbehave

BANGKOK – Thai people frequently go to Buddhist temples to seek spiritual healing and hold ceremonial events, some Thai people even believe that they would be able to go to heaven if they do good deeds based on Buddhist doctrine.

Monks, who stand by and guide people in such endeavours, are often considered representatives of Buddha and expected to behave appropriately in all aspects of their lives.

However, recent news reports in Thailand have shown that it is not rare for monks to misbehave, with some found to have used illegal drugs inside temples and others flirting with women.

Time for the TV series "Monks behaving badly".

Thailands monks misbehave.

Well that is normal, part of the job is misbehaving, or so you would think.

Just look at monks, how many behave ? Not alot.

How many misbehave? A hell of alot.

Religion is a lucrative occupation,

It's a shame that there are so many monks who don't make any effort to behave properly. Thailand's religion is such a nice part of the culture.

Monky business

Who will be the first member to use the well worn and very weak excuse that these are not ' real ' monks ?

Seems the country is full of nothing but ' fake ' monks reaching all the way to the top.

Monkhood sadly, become for long time now, a sort of refuge for all sorts of shady and un savory types of

men who's trying to evade or hide from their past or current misdeeds, the sanctity of Buddhism temples

often misused for nefarious behavior while the public sees nothing wrong with it and allow it to happened,

a better vetting of who's to be come a monk is required, it's high time that Buddhism will advance with

the signs of time as civilization dose.....

It is the same with all religions. DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO.

The same goes for Christianity (all these pedophile priests, "salvation for sale", etc.), Islam (ISIL...), Judaism (Israel!!!) and all other religions that want people to give them money.

In Sweden most people say that they don't pay anything to the church... in reality we pay at least 33% income tax and 1.5% (minimum) of that is straight to the church.

Just for you NKK :-)

" Oy Lung Por.Don't Bogart that joint. Puff puff pray remember?"

A couple of problems I have with this report ...

Thai people frequently go to Buddhist temples to seek spiritual healing and hold ceremonial events, some Thai people even believe that they would be able to go to heaven if they do good deeds based on Buddhist doctrine.

Most I know pray for some sort of self-gain and they are happy to tell me this.

However, recent news reports in Thailand have shown that it is not rare for monks to misbehave, with some found to have used illegal drugs inside temples and others flirting with women.

What's all this 'recent' stuff? I've been here a little over 10 years and as far as I can remember, there has always been reports of monks selling amulets, having mistresses, smoking and drinking. Sure there are over 200 'regulations' for them to follow but if they need sex, drugs and rock and roll, don't become a monk!

One wonders where the author had his/her head buried for the last couple of decades.

Forever in your debt bonnie lad

Time for the TV series "Monks behaving badly".

haha

That would be comical, maybe a little shocking too.

...monks...'elders'....persons of position or title.....

...quaint notion.....'They should have to earn respect"......

the sad thing is that Thai monks are already behind the 8 ball:

- as they themselves are offspring to Thai folk,

- who only really go to, and give money to temples,

- for their own good luck and fortune betterment

#16 - One wonders where the author had his/her head buried for the last couple of decades.

Though the CR Times does not accredit the story, it appears to be a Kyodo news piece - so more than likely written by some young and inexperienced journo (judging by the simplistic, naive writing) who's been in the country 5 minutes. And it's written for a foreign audience, not a Thailand one.

.... must have had your hearing aid turned off...

In any event, you get dobbed in when you don't pass the doobie!!!

Isn't it about time we had a whole ThaiVisa SubForum for just this topic?

"Saffron Sleaze" might be a good name?

Cannabis has been used in an entheogenic context - a chemical substance used in a religious, shamanic, or spiritual context[1] - in India and Nepal since the Vedic period dating back to approximately 1500 BCE, but perhaps as far back as 2000 BCE.

Forest monks.....

My father in law (87) tells me he will visit the temple again when forest monks will be back.

He abhors the existing paramedical organisation.
