BANGKOK — When deputy inspector Chanchai Yensuk was told by a colleague that he could get him promoted to full inspector for 700,000 baht, Chanchai handed over the money.

But the man he paid it to, another deputy inspector named Chanintat Rattanachinotrai, apparently couldn’t work his magic, as Chanchai didn’t get the expected promotion in the latest shakeup.

WOT!!!

Didn't I pay enough???

Where did a lowly traffic cop find that kind of money??????

Where did a lowly traffic cop find that kind of money??????

In Lady Gai's bank account.....that's why she only has 100k left.

Where did a lowly traffic cop find that kind of money??????

By not writing a lot of tickets.

"Upset at the perceived betrayal, Chanchai then filed a bribery charge against Chanintat, only to learn he could also be considered guilty of the crime."

This guy takes "stupid" to a whole other level. Corruption is so ingrained in this society that if morality was this guys ass, he couldn't find it with either of his two hands.

I gather this is why it already made it to the News...

Investigated! For just going about his business in accordance with traditional police policy.

A cop that does not know the law,no surprize there,it takes 2 to bribe.

LOL

this is the normal way of getting promoted in Thai police, but the upfront payment is unusual.

"... Even (junta-head) vowed he would personally insure the matter was taken seriously... "

Low-hanging fruit!

Where did a lowly traffic cop find that kind of money??????

He isn't a lowly traffic officer, he is a deputy Inspector.

Can you imagine the outrage had this story been about a western police force?

Corruption/bribery is just so ingrained in Thai society so deep (maybe call it a tradition) most people just don't see anything really wrong with it as long as it don't obviously hurt them....and then they act surprised when they are put under investigation or arrested for initiating a bribe/stuffing an envelope/etc.

"The police chiefs in charge of the investigation said although Chanchai and Chanintat have confessed to the bribery deal, they won’t outright condemn their actions"

Of course they won't condemn what is normal police practice.

As usual, Prayut wins the award for the most outrageous statement on this issue. The concern seems to be the fact that one officer lied about being able to make the bribe, which is offside and seems to break one of the police/military "code of ethics".
"We are civil servants. We are not supposed to tell lies. This is nonsense," Gen Prayut said angrily.
The "system" doesn't work when someone lies...

You are a very very very bad man, congrats. Post if the day in my opinion.

It should not be a crime to pay a bribe. It should only be a crime to receive one. It is the responsibility of the person in the position of power to refuse to accept a bribe. If he doesn't accept / demand a bribe, a bribe cannot be paid. The person offering the bribe does not corrupt the government official. Either he is already corrupt - and he accepts the offer of a bribe, or he is not corrupt, in which case he simply refuses the bribe.

Under Thai law it is illegal to offer any official a bribe.

Under Thai culture it is standard operating procedure. This country is a maze of contradictions. Amazing Thailand.

Shows the mentality at work in Thailand where a cop is surprised he's being investigated for paying a bribe to get promoted and his bosses won't actually condemn it !

Does anyone still say corruption isn't endemic here and so ingrained in society it's only seen as wrong in special circumstances ?

When you can't trust a criminal, then there's no hope for this society. Honor and dignity among thieves is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. I guess it's time to leave and find a country that's truly rotten to the core.

Such a precious man. He should be on display in that Corruption Museum they built a while back.

Who me? I no nothing!

If anyone read the article

"The police chiefs in charge of the investigation said although Chanchai and Chanintat have confessed to the bribery deal, they won’t outright condemn their actions. They said they want the probe to be concluded before making any judgement.

“Since details are still unclear, I still cannot say whether this is wrong or not,” Col. Thanachai Utsahakit, chief of Nimitmai Police Station, said."

Police chief won't say if bribery is right or wrong, does he really need to think about it? There goes another major problem....stupidity never ends

"Both men have admitted to the crime of bribery, however the situation is not clear" The consequence is both men remain on active duty.

Unbelieveable, they have told them what happened, told them where the money was exchanged and told them what the expected outcome was due to be,, both admitted it but the police are not clear on the situation.

This stinks, absolutely stinks. I hope the PM sticks by his word, makes an example of them both and sends a message right through the police force that this stops or you go to jail.

of course if he was successful nothing would be known

A cop that does not know the law,no surprize there,it takes 2 to bribe.

Exactly, but what do you expect when achieving a high ranking is all about paying money not about your ability or talent as a police officer enforcing the law.

Corruption is so rampant they have lost the ability to distinguish right from wrong.

For a policeman to not know that he is guilty of corruption in this case is staggering and beyond belief.

songpol-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- A police inspector accused of receiving 700,000 baht in cash from his colleague for help to get promotion has been transferred from Bang Rak police station to inactive position in the Metropolitan Police Bureau'd Sixth Division.

The order removing Pol Capt Chanintat Ratchinitrai, 38, from his crime suppression role position at Bang Rak police station to the Operation Centre of the Metropolitan Police Bureau’s Sixth Division was signed yesterday evening by the division commander Pol Maj Gen Songpol Watanachai.

The reason given was to facilitate into the bribe taking controversy after the officer’s colleague, Pol Capt Charnchai Yensook, 39, a traffic deputy inspector of Nimitmai police station in Bangkok, lodged a complaint with Bang Sue police station accusing him of demanding 700,000 baht for help in the promotion to inspector position.

But the annual police reshuffle list did not have his name on the promotion list. The accuser then asked for the return of his money but was rejected.
