District chief: Ban tour buses from Pattaya

I have to agree with the few posters who have mentioned Tram/Monorail as an alternative.

Yes, it would take a lot of money and time to implement but a properly designed tram system serving the whole of Pattaya would certainly reduce the need to use private transport. Have out of town tram stations with adequate parking for tour bus's, private vehicles etc Make it 24/7 365, and reasonably priced, Bingo traffic problem solved, limit traffic to deliveries/residents and the like. Sounds like a winner to me.

Of course other opinions are available but it could be a goer.

When you arrive at the North Pattaya bus station there is a line of baht buses waiting. You tell them where you are going, they put you in the right bus with your bags, 50 baht a head, and the driver does a round and drops people off. The same principle would work here as well. I Was waiting for a friend at the start of Walking St last night. Almost every songtauw that passed was empty, a few had 2 or 3 passengers in them. They would welcome the business.

No they don't take you where you want to go for 50 baht, total BS

Get you wallet out if you want to do that 150, 200, 300, 400, 500 , go give it a go and report back.

Your talking about the most greedy organization of them all, the pattaya baht bus drivers.

You know nothing of what you talk.

We are talking about the 50 baht a head baht bus that leaves with 12 people crammed inside all going to pattaya around the loop of beach road to second rd and other hotels not to far from them and yes you get dropped off at the door for 50 baht

Now that bus stops 10 meters away from the connecting Jomtien baht bus that runs every 10 mins for a whopping 10 baht! or you can go private from near walking st to jomtien for 100 baht

Only a complete Moron would pay 500 baht ! is that you? are you a complete moron?

What they need is a drop off point, where tourists can walk into town. Then the buses drive to a bus park. Easy to do, costs no money except a bus park which can be situated reasonably anywhere. Add on a tax to these tour buses too which will help pay for the bus park. All these woes could be managed easily if intelligent people sat down and worked it out ! Pattaya isn't the only tourist resort in the world ! Build a multi story car park for the publics cars, ban double parking and illegal parking, encourage public transport , and bobs your uncle !!!

Except in Pattaya where a lot of the time Bob's your Auntie.

Just prepare a parking area outside the city, with an easy entrance, not a right angle turn of the main road that causes tail-backs while the buses queue to get in and use the baht buses to transfer the mobs to the city. No minivans please unless you want a second BIRA circuit style of motoring into the centre.

I think the most frustrating thing about the tour buses is, they don't spend any money.

You can watch busloads of Chinese, get dropped at walking st, walk up and down following the guy with a flag on a stick. Take a couple of selfies, back on the bus.

Off to the buffet in the Chinese owned hotel.

"We are talking about the 50 baht a head baht bus that leaves.........".

I thought this was about replacing tour buses by minivans, but ok.....I'll add my 50 baht as well:

The baht-bus drivers will always try to get a "private-ride" for 100-500 baht, depending on the destination.

Otherwise there is the "public-like-service" that will go from the bus station directly to Beach Road and pick up the regular route stopping on demand. Unfortunately the arriving tourists try to hop-on the public-like-ride, but they are not sure whether the songtaew will stop near their final destination, leaving them no other option then to take the private option.

bad idea. One large Bus with around 50 or more passenger need how many minibusses? The traffic and the parking problem will grow. facepalm.gif

Exactly what I was thinking also. 1 large bus holding 30 to 40 passenger will be replaced by 3 to 4 minivans holding 10 passengers. How is that going to help? It will triple the numbers of vehicles on beach road and 2nd road.

You both must not live in Pattaya or tried to drive any vehicle around Pattaya. Buses are one of the biggest problems in Pattaya. There are too many of them, the are too large for the small soi's that they have to drive down to get to the cheep hotels where the tour is put up in. They can not manage turns, much less U-Turns and will block the road for 5-10 minutes trying to navigate such turns. Meanwhile to traffic backs up to create a super traffic jam. Ever been on a small soi when a bus is coming down it? You have to back up or drive up on the sidewalk if there is one.

Then let's talk about what happens after they drop their load of tourist off at the hotel. Do they park on the hotel parking lots? No they park on the street and they do not care where they park. They will park in the red no parking zone and hunker down and sleep until it is time to pick up the tourist at the hotel. They park, take up a full lane of road that is needed for the other people to use to get around town. So a two lane road is now a single lane, which adds up to twice the driving time for the other people driving. Now imagine a long line of buses parked in this way and this is Pattaya roads. Try to get out from a side soi when a bus is parked illegally at the intersection in a red no parking zone? It is dangerous as hell, with a truck or car you have to pull out into the only lane of traffic not blocked by the bus just to try and have a look if there is any traffic before you pull into the only lane of traffic-because buses are parked illegally all along the road. Yes there is cross traffic coming and fast and heavy-way too dangerous.

I have been saying for years they need to build specified bus parking lots across Sukhumvit Road on the Dark Side and ferry the tourist into Pattaya to their hotels. This is the smartest way to handle it. Three vans take as much space a one bus, on the road so it really will not change the traffic volume. The buses arrive intermittently so it is not like all busses come into Pattaya at the same time and all of a sudden you have droves of mini-buses on the road. Come on people use some common sense.

Then any bus caught in Pattaya should be fined and impounded. End of story-if you can get the corrupt MIB to do their job.

NO BUSES ALLOWED IN PATTAY=more lanes of road for traffic to use and will alleviate a lot if the traffic problems. Pattaya was not build smart with a good infrastructure of roads for the amount of people or vehicles on the road. Making it illegal and enforcing buses to stay out of Pattaya makes TOTAL SENSE

Baht buses have a fixed 10 baht bus croute. They are a great cheap reliable jump on - jump off service. Some, that are a different colour go along Sukhimvit and cost 20 baht another great service. If you wish to deviate from their regular routes you pay to have the whole bus to your self and your friends. Depending on the distance it varies. THIS IS YOUR CHOICE. The Baht bus service is excellent - reliable- efficient and good value for money. I just wish there were more routes.

I would go further and close beach road to all traffic and extend the beach back, would stop all the erosion and give more room for a better boardwalk.

the city has many options ,a small electric train which has designated stops and makes a circle aorund beach and second rd...they have options that would increase revenue and clean the air and allow tourists to have a enjoyable walk on the beach rd...if they only think ''outside the box'''...the tiffany show ,and the parasailing are the biggest problems, theyhave tried to ''stage''the buss pickups on beach rd..but it still gets clogged...I say''bring back the rickshaw'''

Banning busses doesn't seem very practical.  How about just make the busses stay on the main roads only, and not go down the little Sois?  Stay on Pattaya Klang, Beach Road, 3rd road, 2nd road, Pattaya Thai, Pattaya Nua, etc.  Actually ticket and enforce if the busses are spotted going down Soi Diana or Soi 2 etc?
