BANGKOK: -- Former premier Thaksin Shinawatra went online to give a lecture to the Thai people about the economy - and particularly the relationship with the Chinese who he praised for what the country has achieved.

Many will see his comments as barbs towards those that ousted him and pointed towards a Thai economy still struggling to develop, reported Thairath.

In the five minute address on his private Facebook page he said that since he first became PM in 2001 the Chinese economy has made enormous strides. He said that at the time the per capita GDP was less than in Thailand but that is no longer the case.

"They have overtaken Thailand in this, and that was not an easy thing to achieve," he said. He praised the Chinese for revenue that has been generated in large scale projects in Africa and Asia with Chinese money from the AIIB bank used in the development of things like trains and communications.

Despite difficult economic times the Chinese are still making progress and are the biggest player in the world economy, he said.

Government behavior aside, he is right. Chinese entrepreneurs deserve praise. They are becoming more innovative and if they lack innovation, they make up for it in taking on ventures. They provide resources for electric cars, smart phones computers and much more.

Yep should come back and serve his time in gaol. Hopefully can finally be investigated for the extra judicial slaughter he unleashed with his war on drugs and the disappearance of the lawyer representing those accused of involvement in the conflict in the south his policies helped reignite.

Correct, and the main reason they have seen so much growth in the previous decades is because the country was extremely mismanaged before that.

Its like telling countries to adopt North Korea's policies because once the tyranny is over there it will probably make a huge growth spurt to catch up with neighboring countries.

On paper it sounds nice but the price you need to pay will be humongous.

Thailand was well ahead of China until Thaitantic, the Asian recession also brought China to a stop, but they clawed their way back to where they are today, big economy and shoddy exports, never think you can do the same as another country, different culture and attitudes wont turn Thailand into another China , Thailand needs to reinvent itself and become the powerhouse of Southeast Asia like in 1996, with a backward thinking and sovereign risk Junta, this won't happen at this time , perhaps with a future Democratic elected government , follow China , not unless you want to run off the rails.................................................

There's quiet a few problems with the Chinese economy that are only just starting to unravel. I'm sure thaksin likes the look of it though and I'm sure he has 'his own' reasons.
