BANGKOK: -- The Land Transport Department promised tough action on public vehicles speeding, refusing fares and taking advantage of passengers as the long holidays came to an end yesterday.

Singled out for particular attention were taxis, motorcycle taxis, buses and minivans, reported Thairath.

Land department chief Sanit Phromwong said that there would be no favors shown - fines would be top whack, immediate and strict.

Errant drivers could expect suspension of licenses and even removal of licenses. All people caught would have their names recorded to help make sure that they would not reoffend.

Several areas in Bangkok were being closely watched by land department officials including Mor Chit 2 , Ekamai ,and the southern bus stations along with areas where many public services are offered such as Future Park Rangsit and the Victory Monument.

Sanit said that a total of 523 vehicles had been caught speeding on cameras and laser guns from July 15th
to 19th inclusive. About half of these were lorries, 88 were public minivans and 78 vans not plying regular routes and 80 were buses of various kinds.

Drivers will be notified and face fines in the post of up to 5,000 baht.

Wow 1000 baht up from 500 baht.

Suspension of licences, would that be for the massive 7 days as is often the case ?

I will make it easy for the officials. Go and watch and inspect all those cabs (about 10) lined up parked on the bus stop between Soi 3 and Soi 5 Sukhumvit Rd.

The fact that buses cannot stop at the curb is only a small part of the problem. The cabs need the curb so the drivers can sit on their ass and bargain over fares through the window with pedestrians on the footpath.

I watch all this before having to risk life and limb trying to board the buses in the middle of the road.

Ahhhhhhhhhh always with the promise of ...... How grand it would be to see - in print - list of those fined/arrested or whatever. They typical Thai way is to talk talk talk. Action requires inertia which is a bit difficult to find in "these parts."

A department spokesperson added that this policy will continue on a daily basis 365 days a year in order to bring offenders to justice.rolleyes.gif
