Time For Police Diguises To Be Banned?

Recommended Posts

In view of the report in the News section today of a police officer being filmed accepting a bribe, is it not time that all police officers are banned from disguising their appearances behind surgical masks and sunglasses?

Although the use of sunglasses can possibly be justified there is nowhere in this country where the air is bad enough to justify the use of masks that do nothing more than provide anonymity.

If I spent evey day breathing in exhaust fumes in heavy traffic in a country with no exhaust emmissions enforcement then I would wear a mask also.

Plus Thai people who are exposed to the sun all day, like a motorcycle cop is, often wear such masks.

Masks are also worn by people who are unwell, in order to prevent the spread of bacteria to others.

I think they all should be banned and charged for impersonating a Police officer......

All of those guys strutting around in their brown uniforms.....

Let me finish that for ya:

All of those guys guys strutting around in their brown uniforms... are the only reason you can live safely in Thailand and not be robbed and/or beaten up.

The ONLY reason? Hardly.

That may be true in small doses, but if you were doing the job of these people, i would give you less than 48 hours @ 12 hours a day running around the amount of traffic they do.

They could always provide oxygen tents i suppose......................wink.png

When I saw the headline, I hoped this would be about people adorning their cars with blue/red/yellow flashing or rotating lights. Those things are sold everywhere and any yahoo speed-racer can load up his vehicle with them. They are a hazard to public safety, and a way to impersonate police as well.

I agree - crack down on the lights would be more appropriate for police disguises.

I've seen many traffic police wear masks, that are not out to get bribes. If OP does not think the air is bad enough to wear masks....he must be smoking something weird.

I do agree, many do wear it when they take bribes as well...but I don't think its a main issue with police taking bribes...

This has been the subject of many reports and posts here and the truth is that the air quality in Bangkok, for example, is good. The wearing of surgical masks does nothing to improve what is breathed in anyway.

Very few police officers spend every day in heavy traffic. Thailand has exhaust emissions enforcement, ask the car manufacturers.

How do face masks affect those who are exposed to the sun? That's not the reason they are worn.

What makes you think that any police officer in Thailand spends 12 hours a day exposed to traffic.

Please travel to the northern provinces during March and April and I think you may retract your statement

I agree that they should be able to make their own decision to protect ones health.

Although when they have an interaction with the public such as a traffic stop they should have to remove such coverings.

Maybe then at least some of the bad cops won't be so likely to engage in nefarious activities.

They have to take their sunglasses off when speaking to somebody they just stopped.

Once an officer was yelling to me while wearing sunglasses and his face was 15 cm away from mine. I thought it was very rude, you keep lept, lept lept he yelled. You dlive no good.

I didn't keep lept because there were loads of taxi's/minivans on that spot on the lept lanes.whistling.gifwhistling.gif

You could have picked up on the "running around" bit as well to really undermine my point........................wink.png

No, no retraction is necessary.

When someone is wearing a surgical mask do you really think that it miraculously provides them with a different, clean air supply? Of course it doesn't, that person whether it is a police officer in Bangkok or someone in the north in March is still breathing exactly the same air as everyone else around them who doesn't wear a mask.

it does help with the amount of dust and large particles one inhales into their body especially for police who stands on the roads....

Try and tell about 5 million Vietnamese motorbike riders that.

That is not correct.

A mask removes airborne particulates. This is especially true for the reference made to poor air quality in the northern provinces due to the fires. The mask is less beneficial for exhaust fumes.

Sorry to be so blunt but you obviously do not have adequate knowledge of this topic to offer sn informed opinion.

A particle mask may remove some particulate pollution, but those masks fit tightly to the skin. I have never seen any Thai wear a particle mask on the street. What you do see some Thais wear are surgical masks which fit loosely over the mouth and nose. Surgical masks provide not the slightest protection against any form of air pollution whether particulates or fumes. None. Zero. Zip. They may inhibit the spreading of germs by the wearer. Wearing a particle mask for protection against air pollution is a form of superstition.

So they stop germs but not soot from diesel exhaust or asbestos dust from brake lining ?

Fascinating.

Can you tell me the micron size of a virus or bacteria?

I live in Colorado and often wear a bandana over my lower face and I can assure you it captures quite alot of particulates. Anything is better than nothing and it has nothing to do with superstition.

Your post suggests that you don't spend time outside in areas with much particulate in the air. Tell you what, why don't you go stand on abusy roadway for 12 hours with a mask on and then look at how dirty it is at the end of your shift.

Cheers

If the OP really believes that he's in la la land, come stay in the North during burning season and tell me the air is not bad, ludicrous statements - the government distributes them to all citizens at that time of year and many traffic police wear them year round. I wonder if the OP has actually been to Thailand!
