Hey all, I'm flying into swampi with a bike, thinking of two options, either take the rail link, or bike it into Bangkok. Anyone done either? Can you bring bikes on the rail link(not in a box)? I've biked plenty in Thailand out in the countryside, but how hard would it be to leave the airport by bike and get non-highway roads into downtown?

Thanks

I guess the bicycle will be boxed/partly disassembled when arriving by plane?

If you are traveling alone it could fit in a van taxi (large taxi) which are available at the normal taxi stand.

Riding a bicycle from Suv to downtown Bangkok?

A horrendous idea for me.

Never would I even think about it in the land of bicycle killers.

Someone else has to answer whether it is technically possible.

I only know the usual way to the airport which is taboo for all two wheelers.

I'm not sure of the small roads immediately around the airport, but Soi On Nut looked OK when I got a taxi along there once.

This is what Google Maps suggested for a walking route - I'm not sure I'd fancy cycling down Sukhumvit Road, though.

I'm going to be using the ebikeshipper, which is a collapsible cardboard box, so I can put it on my backpack if I want to unpack it at the airport.  KhunBENQ, I'm not following you on the "usual way.." part. You mean the rail link is not friendly to bikes?

No I meant the usual roads to the airport which are reserved to four wheelers and above.

I don't know how to get out of the airport on ordinary streets.

BTW: the thread is probably better placed in the Suvarnabhumi airport forum or Bangkok forum?

I guess there would be more educated response.

I myself have never seen a bicylce in the airport rail link nor on any path to the airport.

(but I am not really a frequent traveler)

I admire your heart---but since you stated "....you've bicycled all over the Kingdom..."

Well then, why are you asking everyone for their input? Pedaling from Swampy to BKK has gotta be a death wish. Not alot of "surface roads" in the area. Use the good noggin' between your shoulders.

There are no magic routes between Swampy and BKK. Yes...plan for the best, yet prepare for the worse.

Take the rail link. If some conductor wants to bust your chops, have 200b handy.....nothing you have to dig through your wallet. If not allowed---then snare a taxi to wherever into BKK.

Why ruin the start of your trip rehabbing in some hospital?

If all of us were sitting about with maps and tales of adventure, the very idea of pedaling between Swampy and BKK means that something is wrong with your story.

The OP posted this at the end of July. I assume he has made the trip by now. It's  a pity he hasn't updated the thread with his experiences of how it all went and what he would recommend.

CNXBKKMAN, I'm not going to be in until November, just getting a head start on planning as it will have been a while since I brought a bike back into the country.  From searching around, I gather it shouldn't be a problem catching the rail link to/from BKK, especially if I keep the bike boxed up, so leaning towards that for now.

burgdawg, I've only biked around Eastern Thailand and down around Phuket, in the countryside as I mentioned, never in BKK, so can't hurt to ask if there is a "magic" route that locals might know of, some good side roads that head into BKK, you never know...  Looking around the net more, around youtube, bicyclethailand.com etc, there seems to be a few people who have/do ride around BKK(Durianrider etc..)  Some people back home in the states think I'm crazy just to be driving a car in SE Asia, so I guess it's all relative...depending on experience etc.. I guess I'm one of those people that spend alot more time in the saddle then in a car seat, so when given the chance, I'd rather ride.  But as I mentioned above, I'll probly shoot for the rail link, but always nice to have a plan b.  cheers
