Cambodia armed forces now have 3,000 generals

PHNOM PENH: The latest round of military reshuffle in Cambodia saw the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) which is already “bloated” in the upper echelon have in excess of 3,000 generals, The Phnom Penh Post Online reported on Friday.

The mass promotions saw 120 officers elevate to brigadier general, 87 generals given two stars and two elevated to lieutenant general’s status.

Defence Ministry spokesman Chum Socheat insisted that the promotions were based on merit and capability and followed requests by commanders within the RCAF units.

But observers were quick to slam the reshuffle as yet another example of rewarding loyalty within Cambodia’s armed forces whose top brass has condemnation from the United States for their partisan support of Prime Minister Hun Sen and the ruling Cambodian People’s Party.

The Interior Ministry which controls the police also added 20 new one-star police generals, three two-stars and three lieutenant generals in its mass promotions.

Chum Socheat claimed that there were no nepotism in the reshuffle. “We do it according to the hierarchy with an evaluation from the discipline council. There are no family connections,” he said.

A diplomat reportedly said that the rewards were just a reward for loyalty. “The ranks are meaningless. In most cases, they are promoted to the next rank without any increase in responsibility or function,” he said.

So what? Thailand has more than 4000 generals.

A quick check of Wikipedia (Oh, the accuracy!) shows a Thai military of 306,000 with 1,750 generals or admirals. That's 1 general (or admiral) for every 175 men. Given the usual pyramid of ranks, that would tell me that the minimum rank in Thailand is Sergeant. There are no corporals or privates. Another Wiki check says that the Cambodian army has 85,000 people. Or one general for every 28 men. On which basis the lowest rank in the Cambodian army is a Captain. Hmmm. Now I'm wondering how many Admirals Cambodia has. If none then we might proudly check the box next to the title "Asian Hub of Admirals".

But, back the story. Thailand MUST immediately promote a minimum of 1251 other ranks to that of General (or Admiral) to achieve parity or superiority. There is no way we can let Cambodia / Kampuchea (delete as appropriate) become the Asian Hub of Generals! This cannot be! Something must be done! Why is Uncle bothering with all this peace and happiness stuff when he should be out there promoting officers like mad?

roughly:-
a battalion = 700 men commanded by a colonel  - 675 off
a brigade = 3 battalions or 2000 men commanded by a brigadier general or 1 star general - 225 off
a division = 5 brigades or 10000 men commanded by a major general or 2 star general - 75 off
a corps = 5 divisions or 50000 men commanded by a lieutenant general or 3 star general - 15 off
an army = 5 corps or 250000 men commanded by a full general or 4 star general (or colonel general) - 3 off
GHQ = 3 armies or 750000 men commanded by a field marshal or 5 star general - 1 off

that amounts to 750000 men commanded by 319 generals.
it all adds up very quickly.

now the American army is much larger than 750000.

in the British army a brigadier is no longer a general

so 909 American generals is not too many while 3000 Khmer generals is definitely too many.
last i heard it was 300 and not 3000.

Spot on assessment! Thailand cannot and will not fall behind in Senior Officer ranks, can you imagine the next Army Day with gaps in the ranks caused by the missing Generals........Oh the horror!!
