PATTANI: -- Security in the Deep South is tightened as the August 7 draft charter referendum is drawing near and anti referendum was emerging with spray painted posters rejecting the charter seen in public places.

In reaction to the spray painting by ill-intent people, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) ordered investigation finding out who was behind the anti charter movement.

Meanwhile the national police chief assured the readiness of the police force in the deep south to ensure smooth and peaceful referendum to be held this coming Sunday.

Anti draft charter referendum was seem in Mayo district of Pattani

Red pray-painted messages on fabric with the words “Thai Constitution” and the cross sign on it were posted at several public places.

The spray painted messages also were seen in neighbouring Nong Chik district.

Initial investigation revealed the signs were erected at night.

The police were gathering evidence from surveillance cameras to track the wrongdoers.

In adjacent Songkhla, same same messages with the cross mark on the draft charter were also found in Sabayoi district.

Royal Thai Police commissioner Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda assured of the readiness of the police force to ensure smooth referendum.

NCPO spokespersons of the National Council for Peace and Order said officials are currently investigating the incidents in the southern provinces, in which messages against charter were pasted in public places, to find out which group is responsible for it.

He reaffirmed that there was no reports of possible violence during the seven-day monitoring period.

But he said officials will monitor the situation in the overall picture as the Interior Minister has already set up the center tasked with the duties on maintaining order during the referendum.

"In reaction to the spray painting by ill-intent people...."

So, people who are against the charter, and are forbidden to express their opinion, are ill-intent when they break the "law"....:bah:

Our brave EC Commissioner Somchai will travel to the south and investigate.

It was probably a 2 year old, or a pack of cats.  Does the color of the paint have any clues?

Spray painted images would be a nice divergance from IED's, grenade attacks and gunfire. But to the RTM freedom of expression may be as dangerous as any military weapon.

I guess it isn't Thaksin, last time I looked he wasn't that popular in the deep south.

One observes referendum descent in the north, north-east and now the south.  Seems the administration can't win a trick lately.
