BANGKOK: -- Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will begin inspection of over 330 cinemas located at 39 shopping complexes in Bangkok within the next two weeks to check their fire safety standards.

Any cinema found to be unsafe will be ordered to improve within 30 days, or it will be shut down.

The imminent and thorough inspection of all cinemas in the capital came after last week’s fire at Major Cineplex Pinklao in Bangkok’s Thonburi side where 13 cinemas were housed in the shopping complex.

Electrical short circuit at one cinema on the third floor of the complex was blamed and the fire quickly spread due to its carpet flooring.

At yesterday inspection of some cinemas at Central Plaza Rama 9 shopping complex by officials from the BMA’s Building Control Division and the Engineering Institute of Thailand, to ensure fire safety standards are in place at all cinemas, they found several flaws that needed to be improved.

They said although there are necessary fire prevention equipment such as sprinkles, fire extinguisher tanks, water hoses, but still there are flaws that needed to be improved.

They then cited readiness of the staff to handle fire at the beginning, fire alarm system while movies are showing, and materials used in the decoration ares still flammable materials.

Officials, however, expressed concern for cinemas that were located in old buildings built before the Building Control Act 2007 came into force.

These old buildings have not come under required fire prevention and electricity systems inspection, they said.

But BMA offiviaks said they will invite all parties concerned to conduct inspection of the fire safety system of over 330 cinemas housed inside 39 buildings within the next 15 days.

Any cinema found to have flaws will be ordered to fix and improve in 30 days, or they will be closed.

From a safety viewpoint those with dangerous 'flaws' should be closed until fixed not left to operate dangerously for another 30 days; of course this is Thailand and they will be shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted plus forming a Committee

as usual we have reactive action rather than proactive, having "standards" and enforcing them costs money unfortunately money they are not willing to spend

Let's not condem Thailand as much as human nature. I expect we can be damned sure they haven't yet experienced or even been aware of these kinds of disasters as much as us aliens and as far as it stands many that should know better are just as complacent until the next time it's time to cover it up.

well some good has come out of the recent  fire incidence.

it is not only the cinema houses that need to checked. the follow up should all high rise buildings.

that does not mean that low rise buildings are safe. prathunam market etc are places where fire safety is most need

as the exist ways are overcrowded and not easily  negotiable. have good well lit  signage indicating the exit paths.

Thais have been burning night clubs, discos, hotels, massage parlours and other public facilities for decades.....killing untold numbers of patrons......and always after the events, there's the usual call for urgent  "checking" of buildings etc for safety compliance......yet here again, another major fire.......again, it's just speak!
