Sadly, I fear, the only lesson that will be learnt from this is not to wear a seatbelt.

Well if the life of the people who died by burning to death a few months ago because they were trapped by seatbelts and this person was also trapped it shows the rule is an ass.

Are you kidding me? Maybe if they were wearing seat belts they would not have been trapped and able to extricate themselves before burning! :(

I've been involved in racing motorcycles and cars for years and one would be a dumbass not to use all available safety gear! Wearing seat belts have saved more lives and minimised injuries more than they have caused. My Thai companion is a nurse in a hospital in the Bangkok area and daily treats accident victims and yet I nearly have to "beat her around the head" to wear a seat belt in a motor vehicle, sad to say.

No, i am not kidding. I said if the people burnt to death and the woman who drowned died because of wearing seatbelts, the law is an ass.

Any law that takes away a persons choice to decide what is best, had better work. If not it should be advisory, not compulsory.

Your racing experience has little to do with day to day travel.

If a seatbelt has caused deaths, something needs to be looked at.

Years ago a petrol tanker in the uk, braked hard, lost control and crossed lanes smashing into the front of a van i was driving. The first thing the ambulanceman asked was i wearing a seatbelt? I said yes. His reply was "i would have died if i was not wearing one" But i, nor my passenger were. My point being, insurance companies are controlling too much of the research that goes into safety issues. Looking to save money more than lives.
