Peerawat Klomkliang gestures as he threatens to jump from a pedestrian overpass with his 3-year-old son on Friday west of Bangkok.

BANGKOK — A distraught man threatened to leap into traffic with his 3-year-old son from a footbridge Friday afternoon in western metro Bangkok.

After 20 minutes negotiating, police were able to convince Peerawat Klomkliang, 27, to climb back to safety from his perch over Phutthamonthon Sai 3 Road in Nakhon Pathom province.

Wait a minute.... desperate man???? How about ultimate garbage instead?

The man should have been arrested for attempted murder. Released and allowed to go home a beat his wife up again. What a cowardly, spineless sh1t.

A condom would have solved this problem in both cases.....

This could still end really badly for that child and I hold grave fears for his future safety.

You can't do that, effectively  a gamble has been made with this child's life.  Can Peerawat effectively solve the issues with his girlfriend?  Apparently that question has already been answered.

The idiot's parents should have ditched the baby and kept the afterbirth

I feel sorry for the 3 year old, what life has he got coming

They should have rescued the child and then told the man to jump.

....is the role of the mother irrelevant in this situation.....???

...wow.....

Wow the flame and hatred of posters is disapointing.

There is little access to mental health support in Thailand especially for poor people. Had he injured the child I could understand the vitriol, but a 20 minute standoff that ended peacfully was a cry for help. Even the police - who are not noted for excessive leanancy and compassion in Thaland - released him without charges ( or a beating ).

In contrast to post here there was nothing saying he was drunk, he had no weapons, and no reson to believe he ever beat his wife, girlfriend or anyone else. How would law enforcment or social services responded in YOUR country "rescuing the child and then telling the man to jump?"

Better response from posters would be to be happy it ended peacfully, and wish there were better mental health and crisis intervention support in Thailand. That said - seems like the police did a good job.

Kudos to the police for their restraint and recognizing the incident as a family/mental health crisis rather than a crime.  Kudos too for managing the situation in a way that no one got seriously injured.

In some countries including USA of which I'm a native - the the guy might have been shot by the police.

He didn't attempt to murder anyone.

Who said he was a wife beater?  "Fight" doesn't necessarily mean physical assault, it often refers to verbal fighting.

In 20 years time that baby could become the father. You may well then be commenting that you wished his father had jumped when he had  the chance.
