SURIN: -- The parents of Olympic 2016 weightlifting bronze medalist Sinphet Kruaithong was gripped with both joy and grief after joining neighbours and local authorities in Surin province cheering and watching live TV broadcast of the weightlifting competition from Rio De Janeiro yesterday of their son.

 

Also watching and cheering her grandson in the live broadcast at the hometown in Chupolburi district was 82-year-old Mrs Subin Kongtap.

 

As parents and crowd of relatives, neighbours, local authorities shouted with joys after their son Sinphet successfully lifted pass the final weights in the Men’s 56kg, Snatch Clean and Jerk, with a combined lifts of 289kgs in the 56kg division, finishing behind China’s Long Qingquan and Om Yun Chol of North Korea to the the third rank, his grandmother was shocked and fainted.

 

Amid happiness and shock in sadness, the grandmother was immediately rushed to the district hospital.

 

An hour later, she was pronounced dead despite effort by doctor.

 

The mother of Olympic bronze medalist,Mrs Chan Kruaithong, said she was delighted that her son won the bronze medal and thanked all the people who gave her son morale support.

 

She said however that even she was sad that the family also lost the grandmother, a ceremony to welcome her son would still go ahead along with a religious ceremony to mourn the grandmother’s death at her home

 

She said she would prepare the most favorite dish “Nam Prik  Pla Too” for her son when he returns.

 

She also wished to see that the only road access to her village be improved to welcome home her son.

 

Army athlete Sinphet Kruaithong won bronze medal yesterday (local time) in the second day of competition in the 2016 Olympics.
