ETatBKK
hi there a bit of emotion . . . finally the engine problem comes to our 15-years old Volvo V70. Volvo asks THB300k for replacing the engine :-( the car body is still looking very good. what options I have - buy a new car, or replace a new engine, or find a second hand engine but where, or find a mechanic for second opinion and who . . . ? cheers

jay1980
To look for a used engine, a good place to start would be to ask around in this area just off Bangna Trad, there are hundreds of used engines for sale, often from car's that have been scrapped for tax reasons in Singapore. HK etc. The majority are for Japanese models but they have European engines and parts too. https://www.google.co.th/maps/place/13°37'47.8"N+100°42'18.1"E/@13.6299346,100.7039367,18z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d13.629932!4d100.705031 hope that helps Edited August 9, 2016 by jay1980

fredob43
You don't say where you are situated that would help. Most of the Cab/Limo drivers that I know in BKK use V70 Volvos. Have all changed their engines to Toyota ones I do believe 2.3lt also they have fitted Gas conversions. If it's of any help I can find out 'a phone call' where they get them done. Or you can phone him yourself, try Sam he works out of Nana Hotel Soi Nana. I do happen to know that he has just had his engine renewed at a garage somewhere near Rangsit. DELETED but you will need to speak good Thai. It might help if you tell him Jar or Fred from Kamphaeng Phet gave you his No: Hope this helps. Should be fairly easy to adapt a RWD JZ engine and gearbox into a FWD Volvo. For a new, imported engine from the manufacturer, with a warranty and fitted, 300k baht isn't bad. ETatBKK
now we are looking for garage for replacing a used engine - Volvo B5234T, 2.3T, 5v /20c, perhaps together with the gearbox in one go. all parts + labour may within THB100k. hope the old car still survive after this big operation. yeah, getting a good and reliable garage for this change-over is not easy. PM me if you have any name. yeah, the THB300k estimate from Volvo in fact is reasonable from a dealer garage; yet it is not something for a 15-years old car. edit : I am in north of Bangkok, Bangkhen to be exact. DavisH
I was thinking the 300K was for an 'old' volvo engine. 100K for a used engine / gearbox sounds reasonable, as long as it's in good condition. The toyota engine would give more power, but sure of the cost or the work to make it fit and run. It is a common transplant in the 90's volvos. It's only a common replacement for rear wheel drive Volvos, the OP has a front wheel drive model and putting a JZ into that would mean re-engineering the entire car. EvilDrSomkid
What exactly is wrong with your old engine? Blow a head gasket? Cracked the head? Seized? The operation will not be big. You buy an engine with trans at Chiang Kong in Bang Na like mentioned before. Its a straight swap. The work might run to 30k, the engine/trans I am not sure. Maybe 50k? I have seen plenty of the B5234Ts there. I might be interested in your old turbo. Edited August 11, 2016 by EvilDrSomkid Additional text
ETatBKK
thanks guys for all the interesting input ! I am an ordinary driver and no idea on the technical details. it is already my best effort of reading the VIN and the engine type :-) my wife manages this car with the Volvo service, with an attitude of 'you fix it, I pay it'. well, I don't pay anyone THB300k without a solid reason. they claimed that the injection system was damaged due to high pressure for a long while. of course from a dealer garage perspective, they keen on 'replace it' rather than 'fix it'; they are not a mechanic. this Saturday we go to see the car again and understand it more in details. anyway, not THB300k. Volvos are pretty common here. Can you find another garage that specialises in volvos? They are more likely to fix you engine than replace the whole thing, unless there is extensive damage. Coremouse
used engine+ecu in Bang Phli or Rangsit "Siang Gong" Junkyard usually cost 12,000-25,000baht without tranny. however need to find one decent garage or car mod. shop for swap, dunno how much rebuilt+swap cost. volvo mechanics might not too hard to find, consider so many old volvos running along streets.
